BAB V

STANDING NIGHT WATCH

Night watches are the most critical period of responsibility for the lookout. A
knowledge of to stand night watches is necessary to insure the safety of the vessel.
During the night watch, the officer of the watch frequently enters the chart room or other
lighted areas, therefore, he depends primarily on the lookout to shoot objects.
Night vision differs from day vision to a much greater extend than is generally
realized. Eyes respond slow in the dark.They pick up a moving object more easily than
a still one. An object can be more readily seen at night by looking a little to the right or
left of it rather than directly at it.

a. Definite article.
Definite article'The' dipakai untuk orang atau barang yang sudah tertentu.

The engine of my ship must be repaired.
We studied art of boat handling.
'The' yang dipakai sebelum kata benda tunggal mempunyai arti sama dengan
'That'.
- Did you take the book to the captain ?
- Did you take that book to the captain ?

b. Indifinite Article.
Indefinite Article a atau an menyatakan satu atau sebuah yang dipakai untuk kata
benda yang dapat dihitung.
a book an apple
a boy anegg
a university an hour
c. Indefinite article 'A' dipakai sebelum ikata benda yang dapat dihitung, bila kata itu
disebut untuk pertama kali. Selanjutnya apabila kata tersebut diulang lagi, dipakai
definite article The' sebelum kata benda tersebut.
A man and a woman were sitting in front of me on the bus. The woman wanted
to go to a Chinese restaurant, but the man said that he did not like Chinese food.
d. Nama-nama dalam ilmu pengetahuan tidak perlu menggunakan article.
He is taking courses ml English, French, Mathematics, History and political
science.
He teaches violin and piano.
Apabila name-Hama ilmu pengetahuan tersebut dipakai sebagai noun modifier
(kata yang menerangkan kata benda) dapat dipakai baik definite article ataupun
indefinite article.
He is studying English.
He is studying the English language.
He is taking Geology.
He Is taking a Geology course.
e. Nama-nama cabang olahraga den aktivitas-aktivftas rekreasi lainnya sama dengan
nomor 4 diatas.
He plays both football and baseball.

f. Kata-kata bends abstrak biasanya tidak menggunakan article
