Web 2.0 Tools to Support Collaborative learning

Brief instructions of 1. Go to the search bar and type in the URL: https://bubbl.us/
how to use the tool 2. After hitting Enter, a screen with two buttons will pop up. Click the button on the right
that says Register.
3. On the left, there will be a Free Plan, click on the Sign Up button below it.
4. Insert your first and last name (optional), along with your email, and a password that
youve created for this account, and click Sign Up.
5. After signing up, you will be directed to the main bubble map page where a yellow
bubble that says, Start Here, is centered.
6. If you click the bubble, an option menu will appear. This menu will allow the student to
change the color of the bubble, the size of the text, the color of the text, the shape of the
layout, connect two bubbles with an arrow, and add links or files.
7. The student can fill in the bubbles with correct information based on the topic they are
covering and move the bubbles around, as well as change the size of the bubble.
8. To add a bubble, hover the mouse over a previous bubble until white arrows appear.
Click on one of the arrows to add another bubble. You can also click on the green circle in
the lower right corner to add a bubble. Use the arrow tool to connect the two bubbles.
9. When done, the student will go up to the top right corner and click on the share mind
map button and type in the other emails of the people they are collaborating with. The
student MUST click on can edit next to the emails, or else those people will only be able
to view it.
10. Only one student can edit the map at a time, so it is best to determine who edits or adds
what, and when.

The teacher can assign groups and within each group, give the students a list of
objects to find in their houses. When the students find the objects, they can use
Bubbl.us to insert the name of the objects found in separate main bubbles, and the
color and shape of those objects in the sub-bubbles.
English SOL 1.13: The student will write to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes.
a.) Generate ideas
b.) Focus on one topic.
c.) Revise by adding descriptive words when writing about people, places, things, and
events.
The students could be given a descriptive assignment where the teacher pairs the
students up and wants them to create a fictional story about what their most perfect
school day would be (collectively). The students could use Bubbl.us to come up
with ideas that they want to add to their day and use sub-bubbles to describe that
idea (i.e the color, the texture, the size, the smell and taste, etc.).
History SOL 2.2: The student will compare the lives and contributions of three American
Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern

Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest.
The teacher may assign a short paper to groups of three, where the students are
each assigned one American Indian Tribe. The students could use Bubbl.us to
prepare themselves for the paragraph they are expected to write by inserting the
name of the tribe assigned into the main bubbles, and using sub-bubbles to
describe their occupations, their homes, their form(s) of transportation, and their
contributions.

time (but it isnt free).
2. The website, though easy to use, is very limited with customization and design.
3. The students can only save three mind maps in the free mode.

Brief instructions of 1. Go to the website: http://popplet.com/
how to use the tool 2. Click Login in the top right corner.
3. At the bottom of the pop up box, click Sign up now. An adult must use their
email to create an account for children/students under 12.
4. Fill in the proper information and check the box at the bottom of the screen.
5. Choose the free plan on the left and click Sign me up.
6. Click the button on the new white screen that says, Make new popplet.
7. The next screen will allow you to name your popplet, and choose what color you
want.
8. Follow the instructions on the website they are very thorough.
9. To create a new bubble, click anywhere on the screen.
10. After inserting all your bubbles, you will be able to insert images and text, as well
as link the bubbles.
11. To collaborate, click the Share button in the top right corner.
12. Either click the link button to get a copy of the link, or click Add collaborator.
13. Enter the email address of those who you wish to share it with and click Add
them!
14. To send to a teacher or professor when finished, copy the link and attach it to an
email.

Ideas for how the tool History SOL 1.1: The student will interpret information presented in picture timelines to
can be used in PK-12 show sequence of events and will distinguish among past, present, and future.
The students will create 3 separate bubbles: one for the past, one for the present,
and one for the future. The teacher will give pictures/examples and the students

will have to determine where each of the examples and pictures go. They will
share with each other when done.
English SOL 1.2: The student will expand understanding and use of word meanings.
a.) Increase listening and speaking vocabularies.

b.) Begin to ask for clarification and explanation of words and ideas.

c.) Use common singular and plural nouns.

d.) Use vocabulary from other content areas.

The students will get assigned a word, and be expected to create a bubble map
from it. The definition of the word will fill one bubble, a picture associated with
that word will fill another, and lastly, a sentence with proper use of that word will
fill the last bubble.

Science SOL 1.4: The student will investigate and understand that plants have basic life
needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics. Key
concepts include:

a.) Plants need nutrients, air, water, light, and a place to grow;

b.) Basic parts of plants; and

c.) Plants can be classified based on a variety of characteristics.

Students are to be grouped, where each group is assigned a different plant. The
plant will be the main bubble of the popplet, and the students will fill in smaller
bubbles around it, explaining the basic needs of their plant, and labelling the parts
of their plant.

Brief instructions of 1. Log into the computer and, after accessing the internet, type in the URL:
how to use the tool www.twiddla.com
2. After hitting Enter, two boxes will appear in the top left corner. Click on Start a
new whiteboard.
3. At the top of the page, there will be a tool bar. From here you can draw, erase, add
shapes, text, color, insert pictures, etc.
4. Play around with the tools to understand how to use them, as well as find out what
they do.
5. Depending on the project or assignment, use the proper tools to create a

presentation.
6.To add people, click on the speech bubble on the right-hand side of the white
board.
7. You must copy and send the public link to those you need to add (i.e. people in
your group, friends, professor to submit it as the assignment) or you can create an
account for a free 30-day trial to create a password-safe meeting (this is not
necessary).
Ideas for how the tool Geography SOL 2.5: The student will develop map skills by:

For both of these SOLs, the teacher might have the students upload a certain map,
and use twiddla to write on the map, labelling the proper geographical sites listed.

English SOL 3.12: The student will use available technology for reading and writing.
For this SOL, the students could use twiddla to help them understand a book they
have read. The students could write notes about that story on the interactive
whiteboard.

1. In order to make the meeting or link private, you must create an account.

when given just a blank sheet (or, in this case, a blank, online, whiteboard).
