Ukrainian Food Lesson 2

Overview of lesson: This lesson is a follow up to students learning about Ukrainian clothing and
dance and part of a series where students learn about Ukrainian traditions and culture. This lesson
introduces students to some of the more popular Ukrainian foods and their traditional names.
Students will have a chance to create their own plates of Ukrainian dinner and decorate the plate.

General Learning Outcomes:


2.1: Canada's Dynamic Communities
Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how geography, culture, language,
heritage, economics and resources shape and change Canada's communities

Specific Learning Outcomes:


2.1.3 - investigate the cultural and linguistic characteristics of an Inuit, an Acadian and a
prairie community in Canada by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions for
inquiry:
What are the cultural characteristics of the communities (e.g., special symbols, landmarks,
languages spoken, shared stories or traditions, monuments, schools, churches)?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. understand how food is a recognizable part of a culture specifically Ukrainian culture through
discussion and visual activities
2. recall some typical traditional Ukrainian foods through a visual activity

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
White paper plates
Smartboard

PROCEDURE
Introduction (10 min.):
1. Reflecting Questions

a. What colours was the Ukrainian clothing?
b. What was one word to describe their dance? (ask approximately 5 students)
2. Traditions
a. When we talked about traditions of Christmas one came up was a big supper
b. What kind of food do you have at that supper?
c. Ukrainians have their own food that is part of their culture.

Body (30 min.):


3. Food
a. Show slides of different foods ask students to guess if they recognize the food
b. Explain the Ukrainian name and have students attempt to repeat the Ukrainian
4. Plate Sheet
c. Have students draw Ukrainian food on plate (give a reminder about best drawing and
colouring)
d. Students must label items
e. Have at least 3 different items on plate
f. Plates should be full
g. Colour the food items
i. Leave images of food on smartboard for references
h. When done colouring food students may go ahead and decorate their plates

Closure (10 min.):


5. Favourite Food
a. As cleaning up write your favourite Ukrainian food or one you want to try on a paper but
into box at the back table
6. Hand in Plate Sheet
7. Next class we will finish any work that isnt done and begin learning about one of the most well
known Ukrainian features: pysanky
