On the 2nd of July 2012, the Athletics Club together with the Co-curricular Unit organised a
1Murid 1Sukan 1Malaysia Run in conjunction with the schools annual Health Week. The event
started at 7.45 am and was officiated by the District Education Officer, Encik Hamid.
The marathon was compulsory for all students from Form 1 to Form 5. In total, more than
1400 students took part in the event. Some students however, did not take part in the run as they
were on duty for first aid and time-keeping.
The marathon took place on the road in front of the school from the school gate to the
junction between Jalan Gasing and Jalan Istana. The total distance of the route is 1.5 km. The time
limit was set at 30 minutes. Students who finished the marathon within the time limit were given a
certificate of participation.
The event was organised with several objectives in mind. Firstly, the event aims to increase
the level of fitness among the students of SMK Gasing especially in terms of their stamina. As we all
know, a healthy body is needed in order for students to perform well in school.
Furthermore, the event also aims to instill unity among the students. Sporting events are a
great opportunity for students of different races and religion to interact with each other . Finally, the
event aims to encourage students to excel in sports. A well-rounded student should strive for
excellence in both academic and extra-curricular activities.
During the event, several other activities also took place apart from the marathon. Before
the marathon, an aerobic exercise session was organised to allow students to warm up before the
marathon. Apart from that, a futsal competition was held in the afternoon. A total of 8 teams took
part in the competition. Finally, there was an exhibition at the school hall on the different ways we
can practise a healthy lifestyle.
From the responses of the students, it is clear that such programmes are extremely
beneficial. It provides students with a channel to relieve their stress. At the same time, it also
promotes the idea of sportsmanship among the students.
Due to the great success of the event, it is hoped that such events will continue to be held in
the future.
