Essay (10 points each)

Answer the following in three or more complete sentences.

24. Explain why or why not you think African Americans were treated fairly during and after the
Reconstruction Era.
I think that African Americans were not treated fairly during and after the
Reconstruction Era, because discrimination still continued. Groups like the Ku Klux
Klan used violence and intimidation towards African Americans to keep them from
exercising basic rights such as voting. Under the Jim Crow Laws, African Americans
faced segregation and disenfranchisement laws. They were not allowed to use the same
facilities as whites, and they also had to go through literacy tests just to vote.
(ANSWERS MAY VARY)

25. Was Reconstruction a failure or a success? Explain.

I think that Reconstruction was a failure, because although the U.S. government
convinced the Southern states to rejoin the Union and they passed the 13th, 14th, 15th
amendments, there was still racial injustice occurring in the country. Black codes and
other laws restricted former slaves so much that they went back to working for white
involuntarily through sharecropping. Reconstruction also only lasted a short time, so
the Souths economy suffered, and many lived in poverty. (ANSWERS MAY VARY)
