East Anglian birds feeling the heat

East Anglia‟s ground-feeding birds are struggling to find food after weeks of dry weather. Worms and other invertebrates are
buried deep underground and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) is asking householders to keep bird tables well stocked.
It might be a year late, but the long-overdue barbecue summer has finally arrived in East Anglia. However, while we can
enjoy tossing burgers and freshly prepared salads in our gardens, spare a thought for ground-feeding birds for whom finding
food might be a whole lot harder. After a long spell of dry weather, the ground in East Anglia is hard-baked and the survival
of ground-feeding birds, such as the thrush family, could be in the balance. Thrushes include familiar species such as
Blackbird, Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush, and these birds obtain invertebrate food by probing their beaks into the ground.
However, the current arid conditions mean that the ground is now hard and their favoured foods are buried deeper
underground. This period of foraging austerity could hardly come at a worse time. Many individuals have only recently
fledged the nest, and mortality rates are usually greatest during the weeks that follow. The current dry conditions mean that
these vulnerable birds could be struggling just to find their next meal.
Dr Tim Harrison, of BTO Garden BirdWatch, commented, “The problems faced by ground-foraging birds appear to be
greatest in East Anglia which, unlike other parts of the UK, has now been so dry for so long. By providing food for these bir ds
on the ground and on bird tables, householders could be making the difference between life and death.”
Top foods for your bird table, or to put on the ground: Live mealworms (in a steep-sided tray); Fresh (not dried) fruit, such as
apple or pear; Grated vegetable or beef suet; Small seeds, such as sunflower hearts; Ground-up peanuts. Also, don‟t forget
plenty of clean freshwater for drinking and bathing. BTO 27/7/10

One thousand voices for the wild
More than 1000 people have now signed a petition by the John Muir Trust calling on the Scottish government to give greater
protection to Scotland‟s wild land. As part of our Wild Land Campaign, the Trust recently launched the petition, calling for
the creation of a new environmental designation for wild land in Scotland. The Trust is running a parallel petition, aimed at
the UK parliament, for the expansion and creation of National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England,
Wales and Northern Ireland.
Helen McDade, head of policy for the John Muir Trust, said: “Our petitions have had a fantastic start, but we know that there
are still many thousands of people who share our vision and will want to support this campaign. It is great to see how
passionate people are about the value of wild land and the need to protect it. We have had messages from across the UK
and as far away as Australia and Japan, all from individuals who care deeply about the unique beauty of the country‟s
landscape. The threat to our wild land from inappropriate development, such as roads, housing, and wind developments,
has never been so great. We still need many more people to sign up to our cause so that we can deliver a clear message to
the governments that people care deeply about wild land and want to see it protected.”
One typical comment came from ten-year-old Laura Nicoll, who said: “Wild land needs saving as once it's gone we can't get it
back. Also, I love to do outdoor activities such as orienteering, hill walking and rock climbing - these would be impossible
without wild places. I am ten years' old and if it all disappears what am I going to do when I'm an adult?”

More than quarter of a million hectares coming into Uplands ELS after 2,000 farmers sign up
More than 2,000 hill farmers have now signed up for the new Uplands Entry Level Stewardship (Uplands ELS) scheme,
which will earn them £35,000 on average over the course of their agreement, according to Natural England‟s figures. Just
four weeks after Uplands ELS went live on 1 July the applications account for around 295,000 hectares of England‟s most
celebrated upland landscapes from the Lake District and Northumberland down to Dartmoor and Exmoor. Natural England is
well on track towards meeting its year-end target of bringing 505,000 ha of land into Uplands ELS by March 2011. Uplands
ELS, which supports hill farmers with payments of up to £62 per hectare, replaces the Hill Farm Allowance (HFA) which
ended this year.
Robin Tucker, Natural England‟s Executive Director for National Delivery, said: “I‟m delighted that farmers, whose hard work
produces both great food and the uplands landscapes we all love, are supported in their efforts by Uplands ELS. The initial
level of applications for Uplands ELS is highly encouraging and we look forward to continuing to work closely with hill farmers
to make sure they receive they all the support we can offer.”
Since Uplands ELS was launched in February this year, more than 3,500 farmers have requested information and at least
2,500 have attended farm events up and down the country. More than 150 agents and advisers recently attended Natural
England update sessions on the scheme and there is a wide range of advice available to farmers seeking to join the new
scheme. Natural England 27/7/10
