2. The information in an analog voltage waveform is to be transmitted over a PCM system with
0.1% accuracy (full scale). The analog waveform has an absolute bandwidth of 100 Hz and an
amplitude range of -10 to +10 V.
(a) Determine the minimum sampling rate needed. [3 marks]

(b) Determine the number of bits needed in each PCM word. [2 marks]

(c) Determine the minimum bit rate required in the PCM signal. [2 marks]

(d) Determine the minimum absolute channel bandwidth required for transmission of this
PCM signal. [3 marks]

3. It is desired to set up a central station for simultaneous monitoring of the electrocardiograms
(ECGs) of 10 hospital patients. The data from the rooms of the 10 patients are brought to a
processing center over wires and are sampled, quantized, binary coded and time-division
multiplexed. The multiplexed data are now transmitted to the monitoring station. The ECG signal
bandwidth is 100 Hz. The maximum acceptable error in sample amplitudes is 0.25% of the peak
signal amplitude. The sampling rate must be at least twice the Nyquist rate.
(a) Determine the sampling rate. [2 marks]

(b) Determine the total number of samples per second. [2 marks]

(c) Determine the number of bits/sample. [3 marks]

(d) Determine the minimum cable bandwidth. [3 marks]

4. (a) Describe the functions of a scrambler in digital communications. [4 marks]

(b) A scrambler is shown as below.

(i) Derive the function of T. [3 marks]

(ii) Design the corresponding descrambler. [3 marks]
