Unit Paper 4
Authors Freyermuth (2012) and Douglas & Jaquith (2009) spoke about having intrinsic
motivation in the classroom by providing their students with limitless opportunities in their
creativity. Students are provided with Choice-Based art that expands their artistic behaviors
through demonstrations and planned studio centers. Play allows students to construct their
ideas in an open environment that develops their own independence in their artwork. This
entitles students to a Vulnerability in their conscious to create artwork from their heart. The
ideology of Play can be a very positive concept for classrooms. According to Freyermuth
(2012) Holistic Approach requires finely turned perceptual and intuitive skills on the part of
the teacher. One must be ever watchful for the subtle signs, passing remarks, body language, and
manners of working that suggest what individuals may be struggling with, uncertain about, or
tentatively attempting. Students working on dry clay project may have uncertainty with the
outcome of their work but several minutes later students would begin to create their visually
idea. The project outcome varies from student to student based off their personality. Teachers
have to be mindful of their response to their students mistakes because what seems like a mistake
can be opportunity for growth. In my experience working as an teacher assistant students who
make mistakes can learn throughout the process of the art studio. When we teach for artistic
behavior, children are constantly engaged in authentic learning experiences where they must
apply their knowledge to their work (Douglas & Jaquith;2009. Play and Choice-Based art
provides students the opportunity to work freely in safe environment that encourage their own
artistic behaviors.
The Play and Choice-Based art would be wonderful element to add in my research
project for my Masters program. I would observe variety of classrooms that would use the

theory of Play and Choice-Based art for their students. Based off my observation I would
develop a thesis that would present the psychological process of how it affects the learning curve
for elementary students. This would later help me in my Doctoral program in Educational
Leadership and policy which help create policies in the educational field. Those policies would
correlated with Play and Choice-Based theory to improve the teaching strategies in the
classroom. Teachers would be able to use those theories in other subjects like math, science, and
