Incident Introduction

On a recent arrival to the Duff brewery DuffMan flew into our power lines during landing,

cutting power to the facility. This caused a halt in production while the damage was repaired, in

addition to loss of products that went bad while power was out.

Narrative of the incident

DuffMan- When asked about the incident DuffMan stated that he had been flying along in a

perfectly safe and responsible manner, when suddenly the power lines appeared and seemed to

almost leap up to grab him.

Security Guard- Our security guard on duty at the entrance nearest the incident was only able to

provide information about the damages caused by the incident, as he had dozed off at his station

at the time.

Workers- Several of our workers were outside enjoying their break at the time of the incident,

and reported hearing a loud snap accompanied by a brief crackling sound and a stream of

obscenities, before turning to see DuffMan on the ground untangling himself from the broken

power lines.
Security Camera Footage- this proves to be our most complete account of the incident,

showing DuffMan cruising toward the brewery along the treetops, then panicking as he noticed

the power lines a moment before flying into them. Shortly after the previously mentioned

workers and security guard arrive and begin to try to help untangle him while assessing the

damage.

Challenges of the situation

Our power lines are hard for DuffMan to see.

Inclement or cloudy is weather common in the region of the Duff brewery.

Our above-ground powerlines are vulnerable to falling trees, aircraft, DuffMan, and a

variety of other hazards.

Without any specifically outlined flight-plans DuffMans landings are unpredictable to

say the least. He arrives from random directions and often follows unclear paths on

approach.

Possible Solutions

DuffMan landing protocals: Duff could pay someone to teach DuffMan proper

landing procedures, and establish a set of landing procedures to prevent future damages.

Move power lines underground: Power lines could be moved underground to protect

them from DuffMan as well as any other above ground hazards.

Increase powerline visibility: Power line visibility could be increased by installing

power line visibility markers to prevent future collisions.

Designated DuffMan landing strip with lights: The Duff senior engineering staff

have suggested that a makeshift runway could be constructed on an unused piece of land

next to the employee parking lot, which would place DuffMans landings a safe distance

away from the power lines. All they would need is 10-20 airfield landing lights.

Cost analysis of solutions

Duffman landing protocals very low cost: Management has been notified that some of

our workers are retired pilots, one of which we could likely persuade to give DuffMan a

lesson on proper landing patterns and procedures for the low cost of a few six packs of

Duff beer and a $50 bonus.

Move power lines underground high cost: The cost of this option includes the cost of

entirely redoing the lines, plus lost productivity due to brewery downtime while the

power is down as the new lines are installed.

Increase powerline visibility moderate cost: P&R Tech provided an estimate for the

price of visibility markers and installation. Their SpanGuard ABS Markers cost

$162.00 per unit for standard markers, or $212.00 a unit for ones with SpanBrite

reflective tape to improve visibility. With an estimated 15 markers needed to cover the

sections of power lines most at risk this solution would cost $2,430.00 to $3,180.00, plus

a small installation fee.

Designated DuffMan landing strip with lights moderately high cost: The landing

lights recommended by the senior engineering staff are the Avlite Radio-Controlled Solar

Aviation lights, which are priced at $660.00 per unit. While being solar powered means
they would not increase our electric costs the lights themselves would cost between

$6,600.00 and $13,200.00 altogether.

Recommendations

My primary recommendation is to have DuffMan take landing lessons from our retired

pilot employee, as this is by far the most cost effective option. Management has also informed

me that if this option is taken the $50 bonus could simply be taken out of the employees own

paycheck to further reduce cost and he would be none the wiser, though I would not necessarily

recommend that. The other reason I strongly recommend this solution is that if it fails we can

simply implement one of my other two recommendations, the visibility markers and landing

strip, without having wasted many resources in trying this first solution. Next I would

recommend the power line visibility markers. I would recommend them over the landing strip

with lights because not only will they be simpler and cheaper to install and maintain, but they are

nearly as effective for moderately bad weather. The main advantage of the landing lights over the

markers is in their nighttime visibility, and therefore would not have much benefit for Duff

because as we all know DuffMan says nights are for partying, not flying. That being said if the

visibility markers prove insufficient for certain situations landing lights will still prove a viable

solution.

If you would like more information on any of the recommended solutions please let me know.
