Dynamics Exam
Duration: 150 minutes
Problem 1 (22 pts)
A thin rod has a mass m and length l and is released from rest when = 0.
Determined the following when = 30.

a) horizontal and vertical components of the force which the pin exerts at the rod
b) angular acerbation of the rod.
c) How will the angular acceleration vary when the initial position is at = 0.

Problem 2 (18 pts + 5)

A two-bar assembly is released from the position shown below.

Given that the each of the bars has a mass m and length l, Determine the following:
a) Pin reactions at A
b) Initial bending moment at B
c) BONUS: the angular velocity and angular acceleration of the assembly

Problem 3 (17 pts)

A ball of mass m has a radius r is cast onto the horizontal surface such that it rolls
without slipping. Determine the following:

a) Is the horizontal surface smooth or rough? Justify your answer

b) The minimum velocity VG of the center of mass G so that it rolls completely
around the loop of radius R + r

Problem 4 (13 pts)

At the instant shown below rod AB has angular velocity of AB and an angular
acceleration of AB. For a system where length of AB is l, the length of AC is 0.75l,
and the length CD is 0.5l, determine the following angular velocity and angular
acceleration of rod CD. For simplicity use l = 1 m, = /3, AB = 4 rad/s, and AB =
2 rad/s2

Problem 5 (10 pts)

A uniform bar of mass m is pinned to a collar, which slides along a smooth
horizontal surfaced rod. If the constant acceleration a is given, find the angle at
which this bar will incline. Hint: Neglect the bars mass.

Problem 6 (20 pts)

Consider the following configurations

A disk having a mass m and a radius r moving along a smooth inclined planed at
angle . The disk has an initial angular velocity 0. The disk rolls down without
slipping.
a) What is the angular velocity of the disk after moving a distance s down the
plane?
The same disk is tested while connected to a spring with stiffness k. If the disk moves
a distance s:
b) At what speed should the disk be rolling to cover a distance s.
It is of interest to compare between configuration A and B:
c) Which will cover the distance s faster and by how much? Explain
