a) define polygon; and

b) identify polygons with 10 or fewer sides
Activity The objective of this lesson is to define polygons and for
students to learn about and identify different polygons with
10 or fewer sides.
The teacher will first explain that a polygon is any two
dimensional shape formed with straight lines. Triangles,
quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons are all examples of
polygons. The name tells you how many sides the shape
has. For example, a triangle has three sides, and a
quadrilateral has four sides. So, any shape that can be
drawn by connecting three straight lines is called a triangle,
and any shape that can be drawn by connecting four straight
lines is called a quadrilateral. The teacher can then show the
chart that correlates the number of sides with the name of
the polygon. A circle has no sides so it is not considered a
polygon.

The teacher will also explain the sides are straight lines that
make up the figure. Additionally, polygons have vertices
where two sides meet. This can be done by showing the
slide and also using three dimensional shapes such as

tangrams. Then the teacher will use the smart board

program to interactively let students drag shapes into the
categories that they belong- either 3 side or 4 sided shapes.

Module 4

Some of the shapes may not fit in either category, so it is

not a process of elimination. Students will have to count the
sides. Teachers can remind students that polygons that have
3 sides are triangles and polygons that have 4 sides are
called a quadrilateral. ( which can consists of squares, and
rectangles, rhombus, trapezoids, and parallelograms)
Students can review the shape names and lastly, volunteer
students who have not had a turn can drag and drop the
name of the shapes on the shape. While they are matching
the name to the shape, the teacher will reinforce what each
suffix means:
Tri means 2
Quad means 4
Penta- 5
Hexa- 6
Hepta- 7
Otco-8
Nona- 9
