Dear Teachers
Welcome to your 2017 Handbook and a year of exciting AMEB
developments.
The year begins with the Information Day to be held on
Tuesday 24th January from 9am in the Madley Rehearsal Space.
The Information Day program offers support, inspiration and
collegiality regardless of whether you are new to the AMEB system or
highly experienced.
Recital Exams will be trialled in 2017 offering performance only
assessments up to Grade 8 in violin, trumpet and flute and most
recently Drama and Communication. See page 7 for codes and fees,
and more information.
Brass teachers and students will have access to refreshed trumpet,
trombone and euphonium syllabi. Syllabi features will be highlighted
at the 2017 Information Day.
A number of free half hour teacher consultations will be offered with
a highly experienced practitioner, providing experienced and new
teachers access to professional advice on any teaching matter in
piano, strings and wind. Teachers are welcome to attend with a
student for demonstration purposes. Beyond the free sessions the
service can be booked at a charge of $70 per hour.
The AMEB has some exciting milestones approaching.
In 2017 the AMEB in Adelaide will be celebrating the 130th
anniversary of the music grade assessments that led to the formation
of the AMEB. At the end of the year Series 4 Piano for Leisure will be
launched.
The year will also see the introduction of new prizes:

AUSTA/AMEB Orchestral String Candidate Composition Prize
Grade 2 AUSTA String Performance Prize

In 2018 the Federal Board will celebrate the centenary of the AMEBs
federation.
The uptake of Rockschool continues to grow and we offer
assessments in these highly regarded syllabi in the popular musical
genre. In 2017 South Australian examiners will have completed their
training offering the State even more flexibility.
Regardless of whether you are using new or old syllabi, or whether
you are experienced or new to our system, the AMEB is committed
to supporting you in building the essential foundations for our music
and speech and drama communities.

Examination entry information
Before entering students for examinations, please familiarise yourself
with the current AMEB Manual of Syllabuses for the exam requirements
and the current Teachers Handbook for terms and conditions.
Entry forms are available from the AMEB office or
www.ameb.adelaide.edu.au.
Please complete all sections of the entry form following
the directions below.
Section
1. Examination Session: Refer to the calendar and tick your chosen
session (eg Adelaide March).
2. Teacher Details: New teachers will have ID numbers allocated as
their forms are processed. Please make a note of your ID numbers
from confirmation slips, report forms and certificates.
Unsuitable Examiners/Dates: Please note any examiners who
should not examine your students (eg relative, previous teacher
etc) and note unsuitable dates on the front of the form only.
Please check with parents, accompanists, diaries, school
calendars etc and note unsuitable exam dates such as
school camps, holidays etc. on the front of entry form.
Exam times, once set cannot be changed within a session.
Transfering out of a session will incur a fee.
3. Candidates details: Please complete ALL details for each
candidate. Birth dates and ID numbers are important. If it is the
candidates first exam leave ID number blank and list candidates in
order to be examined. If a candidate is sitting multiple exams, but
in different instruments, a separate entry form is required for each
instrument.
4. Examination Venue: If using a private venue other than your own
please complete Venue Contact Details and Venue Location
Details. It is important to seek permission from the venue co-
ordinator and provide adult supervision for your students. A
minimum of 2 hours is required to hold exams in a private venue.
5. Special Needs: Please include disabilities, impairments or any
related information the examiner or AMEB staff may need to know.
The integrity of the exam will not be compromised, but knowing
students special needs allows us to fairly prepare for them.
Unsuitable dates must be noted on the front of the form not in
this area.
6. Credit/Debit Card Details: Include card details on entry forms to
be posted. The receipt will be sent to the teacher together with
the confirmation slips approximately three weeks prior to the exam
session. The University takes security of teachers card details
seriously and requests that credit card details not be emailed.
7. Teacher Authorisation: Entry forms cannot be accepted unless
signed and dated. Entries are received on the understanding that
teachers and candidates are aware of and accept the regulations
and information published in the current AMEB Manual of
Syllabuses and Teachers Handbook.
8. Please note the Universitys preference for card payments.
Payment by post with entry form should be made to:
AMEB C/- The University of Adelaide. SA 5005
Payment in person is welcomed at the AMEB office,
1st floor, Hartley Building, Kintore Avenue, Adelaide.
Cheques payable to Australian Music Examinations Board (SA & NT)
Transfers
Transfer requests must be advised in writing a week prior to the
exam. Diploma transfers require six clear working days notice.
Licentiate candidates must advise the AMEB of a transfer by 4th
August. Transfers within a session or to a different instrument/grade
are not permitted.
Transfer fees: Preliminary to Grade 6 $67;
Grade 7 and above $78.
See below for Supplementary Exam transfer fees.
Adelaide Supplementary Exams
In 2017, these exams will be held on Saturday 25th and possibly
Sunday 26th November. The session is available to students
presenting a medical certificate or payment of a higher transfer fee.
No new candidates will be entered. Specialist examiners may not be
provided for some instruments. Any prize nominations made in this
session will be considered in the following years awards.
Supplementary Exam transfer fees: $75 for Preliminary to Grade 6;
Grade 7 and above $85.
Refunds
Refunds are considered:
1. Up to two weeks after the closing date full refund or free transfer
to another session.
2. Between two and four weeks after closing date 50% refund, but
if transferring, fees will apply.
From four weeks after the closing date no refunds are given and
transfer fees apply.
Complaints
Complaints about any aspect of an AMEB examination, up to and
including the level of AMusA must be communicated in writing to the
State Manager within two weeks of receipt of the exam report.
Federal exam complaints must be made in writing to the Federal Office.
Written exam papers will be re-marked on receipt of a written request
to the State Manager, together with the re-marking fee. If examiner
error is confirmed the re-marking fee will be refunded. Re-marking
can result in higher, same or lower grades.
Theory re-marking fees: Grades 1-4 $64;
Grades 5 and above $74.
Teachers and Parents are reminded that grade and
diploma exams may fall within school holidays and in
some cases on public holiday weekends.

Entry Forms (Available from

Prepare your students according to the current AMEB
Manual of Syllabuses and Teachers Handbook.
Diarize exam timetables and closing dates and ask
students and parents which dates are unsuitable.
Complete, sign and submit Entry Form with payment
to the AMEB Office by the closing date. Remember,
students will be examined in the order they are listed on
the entry form.
List dates to avoid, considering students, venue and
accompanists availability on the entry form.
If your students are only available for a private venue
session, but you have less than two hours examining,
mark the entry form request assistance with a venue.
Keep a copy of both sides of your completed form.
Confirmation slips will be posted approximately three
weeks prior to the exam
If confirmation has not been received by that time, please
contact the AMEB office.
Advise any errors to the AMEB and ensure the back of
the form is completed and ready for presentation to the
examiner with the titles and composers of pieces to be
played listed.
Examination Day
Remove any markings concerning general knowledge
from music prior to the exam.
Ensure candidates arrive at least 15 minutes prior to
their scheduled exam with their completed candidate
slip and report to the venue supervisor.
Advise students to take original music to the exam
even if performing from memory. If performing repertoire
the examiner may not have heard please provide a
copy of that music. Copies made for the examiner will
be destroyed after the exam. (See AMCOS directions
for copying music for the purpose of an exam.)
Reports
The AMEB is committed to prompt distribution of
reports. If you have not received your reports within
seven working days of the exam, please contact the
AMEB office.
Certificates
Note the certificate availability advice with your
students report. Adelaide metropolitan students
certificates will be stored at the AMEB office until
collected.

Additional fees
Late fee
$57 per candidate. Applicable for two weeks only after the closing date.
Transfer fee
$67 per candidate (Preliminary Grade 6), $78 (Grade 7 & above).
Requests must be made in writing. Transfers are not permitted
within a session, over the year or to a different instrument/grade.
Out of session exam penalty fee
$155 plus the examination fee, subject to AMEB approval and only
offered until the end of September.
Supplementary exam in Adelaide transfer fee
Practical exams only. Requests must be made in writing.
$75 per candidate (Preliminary Grade 6), $85 per candidate
(Grades 7 & above). Medical transfers supported by medical
certificates free of charge.
Theory/Musicianship/Music Craft papers
$4.00 each. Note, teachers will receive a complimentary paper with
their students reports, for each hard copy grade in which they have
submitted candidates.
Re-evaluation of written results:
Fees are $64 for Grades 1-4 and $74 for Grades 5-8.
A written request together with payment is required for
re-evaluation. Should examiner error be established, resulting in an
adjusted grade, the fee will be refunded.
AMEB Teacher Consultancy for 2017
Support for any AMEB preparation issue
Strictly confidential consulting sessions are available with
a senior AMEB examiner to teachers of the AMEB system.
Questions answered and advice provided on any matter
relating to AMEB syllabuses or entering candidates for AMEB
examinations.
Teachers are welcome to bring a candidate to the consultation
for demonstration purposes. Details of topics on which
specific assistance is sought will be helpful when booking.

Australian Music Centre and Copyright
Teachers have a responsibility to ensure that they act appropriately
with regard to copyright both morally and legally and encourage
students to do the same. Copyright requirements are available
from the Australian Music Centre Library at www.apra-amcos.com.
au or toll free on 1800 651 834. If your student needs to copy for
examination purposes please refer to the Copyright Guide.
All copies of music made for examination purposes should be left
with the examiner for destruction following the exam.
Hard Copy Theory/Musicianship/Music Craft results
The processing of these results requires four to six weeks. Diplomas
require eight to twelve weeks. Your patience is appreciated.
Complimentary theory papers are sent with the exam result to
teachers for each grade in which they submit candidates, unless a
federal embargo has been placed on the papers.
Diploma Exams
Entry forms are available from the AMEB office or
www.ameb.adelaide.edu.au
Candidates must choose their programs with the playing time of between
35-40 minutes, to allow for assessment of General Knowledge.
In Piano for example, particular attention is paid to shaping phrases,
dynamic contrast and a realisation of the various keyboard touches
available.
Competency, accuracy and understanding of the varieties of style are
basic essentials.
Diploma exams demand concert standard and preparation longer
than one year is expected.
Diploma candidates are requested to bring a copy of their music to
the exam. Photocopies are permissible and the AMEB is prepared to
make those copies if ample notice is given. Examiners will retain and
destroy the copies after the exam.
AMusA and LMusA candidates are offered a free performance evaluation
prior to the exam for senior, professional advice on preparation.

AMEB academic dress is plain black under-graduate-style gown,
mortarboard and a stole of black silk lined with:

Private Venue Criteria
Providers of AMEB Exam Venues are required to provide:
A quiet, comfortable room, measuring three metres by four
metres, well ventilated, well lit and ensuring privacy.
A piano in good condition, with regard to action and tuning.
A piano stool, preferably adjustable.
A reliable and well balanced music stand for candidates other
than piano.
Suitably sized and stable desk and chair for the examiner (not a
card table).
Adequate waiting area for candidates.
Clean and accessible toilet facilities.
An adult with no vested interest in the outcome of the exams
present outside the closed door of the examination room.
Public Liability Insurance.
Privacy Policy
The AMEB will not divulge any personal information to individuals
or organisations including the University of Adelaide without the
permission of those concerned, unless required by law.
Candidates or teachers wishing to check their own records are
welcome to contact the AMEB office.
Scholarships and Prizes
7th Grade Scholarship (SA)
A scholarship in practical music, shall be offered annually for Grade
7 AMEB candidates in both traditional and leisure syllabi examined in
South Australia. Each Scholarship shall be subject to the conditions
in these regulations and be paid in equal instalments at the beginning
of each year of tenure.
The proceeds of the scholarship must be devoted to the winners
education in the practice of music engaging any teacher or in any
institution, previously approved by the AMEB.
Candidates at exams in the current year obtaining grades A or A+
in Grade 7 practical music, and who have also passed the theory
additional requirements of their syllabus (refer Regulation 19 in the
current Manual of Syllabuses) shall be eligible to compete for the
scholarship which will be awarded to the candidate showing the
greatest musical promise at the 7th Grade Scholarship Auditions.
Practical proof of such progress may also be required. Failure to pass
any AMEB examination or test or to present such certificate shall
terminate the scholarship.
Traditional Practical Exams
This Scholarship is tenable for three years and the total value is $660.
Scholarship holders shall, at the end of the first year and second
years of tenure, present a satisfactory certificate of progress and
regularity of attendance from their teachers.
Leisure Practical Exams
This scholarship is tenable for two years and the total value is $440.
Scholarship holders shall, at the end of the first year of tenure,
present a satisfactory certificate of progress and regularity of
attendance from their teachers.
General Grade Prizes (SA & NT)
Each year the AMEB joins with various sponsors of developing
musicians and speech practitioners to award prizes to candidates
in various grades of music and speech practical and theory judged
by examiners to have demonstrated outstanding ability. The Prizes
Committee of the AMEB Advisory Board (SA & NT) will make
selections on behalf of the Board.
Candidates cannot be awarded a prize more than once in the same
grade. If at any time it is deemed by the AMEB to be necessary a
special exam will be held to decide an award.
Licentiate Prize
A prize of $650 shall be awarded to the best candidate who
completes the LMusA practical exam. If in the examiners reports no
candidate is of outstanding merit, the prize shall lapse for the year.
The prize shall not be awarded to the same person more than once
Associate Prize
A prize of $450 shall be awarded to the best candidate who
completes the AMusA practical exam or, if in the examiners opinion,
no candidate is of outstanding merit, the prize shall lapse for the year.
The prize shall not be awarded to the same person more than once
nor to the winner of the Jean Adelaide Dent Prize.
Eva Lines Memorial Prize (SA)
The Eva Lines Memorial Prize has been made possible by a bequest
from Eva Lines. It is awarded on the results of Grades 5 and 6 piano
exams conducted in South Australia by the AMEB to a candidate
whose postcode falls within the range of 5200 to 5999. The Prize is
to be awarded to the candidate who, being eligible is considered by
the examiners most worthy to receive the award. The value of the
Prize shall be $700 unless otherwise stated by the University and the
Prize shall not be awarded to anyone more than once. These rules
may be varied from time to time by the University, but the title and
purpose shall not change.
The Thelma Dent AMEB Piano Scholarship (SA)
This Scholarship has been made possible due to a bequest from
Thelma and Jean Adelaide Madeline Dent. The scholarship is
awarded annually on the results of the AMEB Grade 8 Piano in South
Australia provided that in the opinion of the examiners there is a
candidate of sufficient merit.
The scholarship shall be awarded by the Prizes Committee to the
candidate considered from examiners nominations to be most
worthy to receive it. It shall not be awarded more than once to the
same person, nor to a person awarded the AMEB Grade 8 Piano
prize in any year.
The recipient is required to provide evidence of enrolment for
continued instruction in piano playing.
The value of the Scholarship is $2,000.
These rules may be varied from time to time by the University
of Adelaide, but the title and purpose of the award shall not be
changed.
George Pearce Memorial Award (SA & NT)
The Music Teachers Association in managing the George Pearce
Memorial Award has made an award in AMEB Piano, under the
following rules.
The prize shall be known as The George Pearce Memorial Award
and the value of the prize shall be $100 and may be awarded
annually by the AMEB Prizes Committee on the results of its AMEB
Grade 7 piano exams if a candidate is of sufficient merit.
The prize shall not be awarded more than once to the same
person and shall not be awarded to a person awarded a 7th Grade
Scholarship or any other Grade 7 prize for AMEB Piano in any year.
These Rules may be varied by the Music Teachers Association, but
the title and purpose will remain the same.
AMEB (SA & NT) Composition Prize
To acknowledge the skills developed by students using the AMEB
system, a prize has been established for senior Level 2 candidates
who have used those skills to compose an Extra List exam piece.
The music must be the appropriate standard for the grade exam
being undertaken. A copy of the music must be provided to the
examiner who, if nominating the candidate for a prize, will pass it to
the AMEB.
The AMEB Composition Prize is to be awarded to a Grade 7 or 8
practical exam candidate, who has
Completed grades 1, 2, and 3 in any one of the AMEBs theory
syllabi and
Composed a piece of music used in his or her exam as an Extra
List piece that is considered by the examiner to be outstanding.
The value of the prize will be $500 and be awarded by a nominee of
the Elder Conservatorium from examiners recommendations and the
written music provided.
If appropriate, the composition may be performed at the annual
Showcase.

On-line Theory Exams for classes
1. Register by creating an account at www.amebexams.edu.
au Carefully note all codes and passwords.
2. Log into your account on that website at any time to
purchase an exam using a credit or debit card.
3. Click on Buy Exam and enter the number of students in
your class.
4. Select Group Option on the next page if you want your
students to sit as a class doing the same grade and
subject.
5. Enter candidates details and purchase the group exam
using a credit or debit card.
6. Once the group exam has been purchased you will be sent
students exam keys via email and students can begin
taking practice exams.
7. Before the official exam can start, you will need to login to
your account holder account and select Authorise Group
Exam from the left hand panel
8. Ensure a supervisor is present.

AMEB Student Accompanist Award
An award is offered to acknowledge an AMEB candidate who, in
developing their own performance skills through the AMEB system
has successfully accompanied another candidate in their AMEB
exam. The value of the award is $700.
To be eligible candidates must have a minimum of AMEB Grade 6
practical and AMEB Grade 3 Theory and have undertaken a minimum
of three AMEB exams; one within the previous three years.
Candidates must apply for the award through the AMEB on 8313
8088 or www.ameb.adelaide.edu.au and have their parents written
approval if younger than 18.
Feedback from the AMEB examiner and the instrumental teacher will
be used by a judging panel of the Accompanists Guild in addition
to a full score to determine the winner. The panel will be considering
whether the candidate:
Made himself/herself available in a reasonable manner for rehearsals
Facilitated communication during rehearsals and performances
Supported the candidate well during performances
Helped to make the performance a positive experience.
Performed the works well
In the case of a tie between two or more student accompanists the
candidate having to perform the more challenging work, musically
and technically, will be deemed the winner.
The Regina Rose Memorial Award (SA & NT)
Family and friends (including the AMEB and Music Teachers
Association) of the late Regina Rose have contributed an amount of
money to establish The Regina Rose Memorial Award. To be eligible
candidates must have:
Successfully completed AMEB piano exams to a minimum level of
Grade 3.
Demonstrated a strong commitment to the study of the piano by
having achieved a minimum B grade in the previous exam.
Qualified for concessions with a school card or social security
concession card.
Received their teachers recommendation for financial assistance
Lodged their application with the AMEB no later than 31st May
each year.
The awards are available for students in all sessions and recipients
privacy is protected.
Teachers who believe they have students who would qualify for
this award are invited to contact the office on 8313 8088 for an
application form.
The Jean Adelaide Madeline Dent Scholarship is awarded to the most
outstandingly successful diploma violin candidate with a preference
to LMusA. The value of the scholarship is $2,000.
The scholarship is awarded on the results of the AMEB (SA) exams
in violin provided that in the opinion of the examiners there is a
candidate of sufficient merit.
The prize shall not be awarded to the same person more than once.
These rules may be varied from time to time by the University, but the
title and purpose of the award shall not be changed.
AMEB Orchestral String Candidate Composition
AUSTA Prize
A prize to the cash value of $100 is offered for the most outstanding
student composition performed in any orchestral string examination
from that year.
The State President (or delegate) AUSTA SA will adjudicate the award
across all orchestral string candidate compositions from copies of
the music submitted to the AMEB for consideration for this prize and
determine the winning composition from a copy of the score.
The criteria will include on equal merit:
Creative use of string techniques
Tonal qualities that demonstrate string uniqueness
Structure and artistic qualities of the composition itself
The decision will be final and no correspondence entered into. The
result will be published with the AMEB prize winners and announced
at the Awards Ceremony and Showcase.
If appropriate a performance may be considered at the annual
concert.
AMEB Grade 2 String Performance AUSTA Prize
Each year AUSTA will sponsor a prize to the cash value of $50 for
the most outstanding student in any orchestral string examination in
Grade 2 from that year.
The AMEB Prizes Committee will determine the winner from the
examination reports of all Grade 2 orchestral string candidates
who achieved a High Distinction. The decision will be final and no
correspondence entered into. The result will be published with that
years list of prize winners and announced at the annual Awards
Ceremony and Showcase.

David Merchant Prize (SA & NT)

The late David Merchant was a long term AMEB examiner and
advisor who in 2002 entrusted to the AMEB an amount of money to
establish an annual prize in organ/piano/theory/musicianship/music
craft. The prize is known as the David Merchant Prize.
The value of the prize is $220 and is awarded annually at the
discretion of the Prizes Committee.
The prize is awarded for excellent work (A or A+) in organ (pipe) or piano,
or Distinction or High Distinction in Musicianship, Theory of Music or
Music Craft. The student must be from South Australia or the Northern
Territory and have successfully achieved AMEB Grade 6 or higher.

Jean Adelaide Madeline Dent Scholarship (SA)

This Prize has been made possible due to a bequest from Jean
Adelaide Madeline Dent.
