Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 2. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS Candidates prepared in early
childhood degree programs understand that successful early childhood education depends upon partnerships with
childrens families and communities. They a) know about, understand, and value the importance and complex
characteristics of childrens families and communities. They use this understanding to b) create respectful,
reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and c) to involve all families in their childrens
development and learning (NAEYC, 2010).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the fall semester of 2017 during my ECED 204-Families in Transition class, I created a Family
Case Study and Resource Kit. For this project, I worked together with another classmate to discuss and work
through several scenarios regarding the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. After displaying my knowledge and
ability to use The Code, I contacted a family whom I later met with and interviewed on several occasions. Before
meeting with the family, I designed a questionnaire in order to fully understand the familys needs, goals,
strengths, and overall relationship. While interviewing the family I took note of their interactions, dialogue, and
overall attitude towards one another. After interviewing the family, I showcased their characteristics through a
Case Study and designed a Resource Kit to continue to build on their strengths and needs.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through this project, I learned the importance of establishing and building family relationships and also
how to make these relationships last. Since finalizing this project I have kept in close contact with the family and
continue to empower them. Also, this project has enhanced and expanded my knowledge of the NAEYC Code of
Ethical Conduct. I can take this newfound knowledge and relate it to real world scenarios. Lastly, I learned how
to support families strengths as well as create a plan in order to build on those strengths.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

The Family Case Study and Resource Kit proves my competence in NAEYC Standard Two by my ability
to form a relationship with each member of the family and make myself knowledgeable of their overall strengths,
needs, interactions, goals, and relationship. Additionally, I used this knowledge to research, design, and
implement helpful resources that would continue to support the family. Some of the resources I provided were
aimed at enhancing their childs learning and development, which was a specified need from the mother. Also, I
provided resources that would enrich the familys community involvement, which proves my competence on the
importance of creating relationships within the community. Lastly, this project shows my ability to provide
meaningful support to all the families I will encounter.
