It has been well known that West Java Province is one of many
regions in Indonesia, in which the neotectonic activity is very intense to
cause intensive deformation of Tertiary marine sedimentary rocks of
more than 6,000 meters thick followed by intrusions of magmatic rocks
with the occurrences of many volcanoes. The thick soils originated
from all these weathered rocks in this wet climatic region are prone to
landslides. In this province landslides are triggered by many factors
encompassing changes of geometry of topographic slope with the soil
and/or rock masses that construct it (internal factors), rain water and
many kinds of external loads (external factors) including earthquake
that cause external forces.

To understand the
decrement of safety factor due to
triggering factors that initiate
landslide zone II as zone of
instable to critical slope is taken
as the object for simulation. This
area is located in the upstream
side of Citanduy river basin. In
this area the soils of the hill
slopes are weak and thick, and
the available triggering factors
stability to get the understanding them indicated by high degree of
of the slope instability cor-relation coefficient (Figure 3,
phenomenon. 4, and 5).

Zone I is a zone of unstable creeping or
slopes, where slopes are in
process of sliding. In this zone
landslides are common. This zone
is a landslide hazardous area
which is characterized by
frequent landslides. Old and new
landslides occur here, in which
growth of vegetation is not in a
normal state but slant at an angle
sliding is under way. This zone
should be stabilized and
conserved for better prevention
of landslides. If necessary this
zone should be abandoned and
the people living here should be
evacuated.
