asteroids, and comets;
b) relative size of and distance between planets;
c) the role of gravity;
d) revolution and rotation;
e) the mechanics of day and night and the phases of the moon;
f) the unique properties of Earth as a planet;
g) the relationship of Earths tilt and the seasons;
h) the cause of tides; and
the history and technology of space exploration

Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods

Media:
2 desktop computers with internet access Will be used to explore and located Celestial
bodies using Google Earth. Students Will have planet worksheet to draw relative sizes of
planets and features seen on Google Earth (for Earth and Mars) others if possible. Also, will
answer questions on worksheet based on location of planets using Google Earth.
2 desktop computers with internet access- Will be used to explore and located meteorites
impacts on Earth. Students will answer question about the features of the impact using
Google Earth.
1 desktop computer with internet access- Will be used for further inquiry about celestial
bodies.
1 overhead doc camera used to project worksheets as teacher is explaining assignment
and expectations if SMART board is not available.

Materials:
Pencils Used to draw celestial bodies
Worksheet packet- of instruction of Google Earth assignment. Worksheets will include
celestial bodies drawings and meteorite impacts on the earth and questions that correlate to
both worksheets
Diagram worksheet Teacher will see what the students know about celestial bodies and
their characteristics/ Teacher will teacher students celestial bodies if they do not Know.
Crayons Used to color planet drawings.
Worksheet packet Teacher will display packet on Doc camera as she explains procedures
for different worksheets and centers.

Methods:
Whole introduction to celestial bodies TTW utilize pictures of sun, moon, Earth, other
4

planets and their moons, meteors, asteroids, and comets. TTW discuss the physical
characteristics of the solar system with descriptions of each celestial body, the teacher will
NOT order planets at this point
Whole Group Introduction of the solar system As a first day introduction, TTW explain the
role of gravity in the solar system and describe the unique characteristics of planet Earth.
TTW also compare and contrast the ideas of Ptolemy, Aristotle, Copernicus, and Galileo
related to the solar system.
Whole Group Instruction of Center Activities TTW introduce each center and explain
procedures to successfully complete. TTW divide class into small groups of four and assign
each group a center. TTW inform students that rotations are every 30 minutes.
Small Group Centers TSW work collaboratively to complete both center activities, but
each student will have their own worksheets. TSW also work together to answer any
queries during the assignment at the inquiry station

Require Learner Participation

Whole Group anticipatory set :

During this time the teacher will call a student to first locate celestial bodies on a unlabeled
map of the planets to include the sun, first allowing the students to name and identify the
planet before revealing the correct answer. TSW be actively engaged because they are
able to find the locations rather than passively watching the teacher.

Whole Group Introduction to solar system:

As part of the first day introduction of the solar system, TTW facilitate discussion by asking
students what causes season changes and where is the sun when it is night time. TTW then
explain Seasons are caused by a combination of the tilt of Earth on its axis, the curvature of
Earths surface and, thus, the angle at which sunlight strikes the surface of Earth during its
annual revolution around the sun and the ideas of Ptolemy, Aristotle, Copernicus, and
Galileo contributed to the development of our understanding of the solar system. few, TTW
also explain the difference between inner and outer planets as a review.

Whole Group Instruction of Center Activities:

TTW explain and demonstrate how to complete each center activity. TTW utilize the doc
camera project and worksheet packet to demonstration. The students are to access Google
Earth to see features of planets and meteorite landing sites. TTW also explain that the
inquiry station can be used to answer any question they might have about celestial bodies
and the solar system shall they arise. TTW divide the students into groups of four where
they will collaborate on each center activity. TSW follow the teachers instructions for each
center to successfully complete the assignments.

Small Group Center Activities:

TSW work in groups of four to collaborate on each center activity. Each center rotation will
last 30 minutes.
Google Earth solar system TSW use google earth and descriptions of each
celestial bodies to draw and label each planet and dwarf planet, the sun, and the
5

moon on worksheet. TSW also answer question on the worksheet using Google
Earth. The questions on worksheet are guided questions asking the students about
the location, and elevation of each planet. For planets that provide guided tours,
comprehensive question will be provided.
Google Earth meteorite landing site TSW use google earth to locate the meteorite
crash sites. TSW also answer question on the worksheet using Google earth. The
questions on the worksheet are guided question that will guide the students
exploration of crash sites of meteorites on earth and the surrounding locations.
Each of these center activities appeals to each learning style and also uses different
skills. The Visual learning will be able to connect verbal description and reading visually
via Google Earths guided tours and the inquiry station. The Verbal learner will be given
descriptions of celestial bodies during BrainPOP video, anticipatory set and discussion
time and also the opportunities to collaborate with group members on the assignment
and question associated with each topic.

Evaluate & Revise

Student Performance:
The students will be evaluated on completeness of activities. After time for the center
activity has expired, the teacher will review what the students have learned. TTW lead
discussion in based on the finding of the students, question will be related to the questions
in the packet. TTW provide correct answers if any are incorrect.

Instructor Performance:
During the center activities the instructor will encourage the students to use evidence to
support answers to questions and detailed characteristics of drawings. After the final
discussion TTW have final confirmation of what students have learned and will also have
the opportunity to give further explanation if needed.

Media Performance:
The media that was used allows the students to get a visual of what we are learning about
the solar system. The Media will allow them to connect visuals of celestial bodies to the
description of the solar system given in the beginning of lesson.
