Doctoral Research Fellowship in Design History within the

project "Back to the Sustainable Future"
The University of Oslo, Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, invites applications
for a PhD Research Fellowship in Design History. The position is part of the research project Back to the
Sustainable Future: Visions of Sustainability in the History of Design (BaSF) funded by the Research
Council of Norway, and will contribute to the projects explorations of the history of sustainability as a key
concern in design discourse.

Job description
Back to the Sustainable Future explores the historical conditions for, and development of, sustainable
design. Today, sustainability is an essential parameter in all design practice, education, research and
mediation. However, this green revolution is a glaringly white spot on the design historical map, still
awaiting its scholarly historicization.

Back to the Sustainable Future investigates how designers, educators, theorists, critics, promoters,
consumers and users have conceptualized visions of sustainability in the history of design since the
1960s. The aim is to trace how notions of sustainability have migrated across time and socio-cultural
domains, from design education and social activism via commercial and industrial contexts to mainstream
media and consumer behavior. By doing so, we are addressing a significant lacuna in design historical
scholarship and thereby expanding the subject matter of the field.

is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of

KTH Lighting Design

The Lighting Laboratory is a division at the department of Architecture at the School of Architecture and Built Environment at KTH. Its approach to light
and light planning, is a combination of visual, physical and biological based experience and knowledge applied to design, technology and health. The
studies were engaged in educational and research activities that stimulate human centred innovation in the field of lighting design and technology, applied
to the architectural space, where theoretical knowledge will be combined with practical application in laboratory experiments, project work and case
studies.

The understanding of the importance of good lighting design in urban areas, buildings and interiors is increasing. Light is fundamental to architecture and
essential for human well-being. Lighting quality affects human behavior, comfort, health, efficiency, safety and security.

National College of Arts started as Mayo School of Art in 1875. The course was a five year course leading
to Bachelor of Architecture Degree. This department was established in 1903. We were taught to explore
the visual environment with representational and freehand drawing. We studied principles of design in a
given environment ad relate the study of living space to human values and dimensions. We learnt the
history of architecture, find co-relations between classical and international specimens and study the
evolution of emerging form in the region. The goal of the department of architecture is to prepare
professional architects conversant in international design skills crucial for contemporary architectural
practice. The focus is to transform frames of reference about the responsibilities of practitioners in the
field. Inclusive of architectural training, the department endeavours to incorporate instruction and
research in conservation and vernacular traditions. The Department aims to prepare professional
architects for practice and advanced studies with critical and analytical thinking, communication skills,
technological competence, ethical conduct, and comprehension of the theoretical basis of design.
Bachelor in Architecture program aims at preparing professional designers capable of critical thinking
and creative expression, and students for advanced studies and research in the related fields.

My focus has always been critical pedagogical methods and inculcate environmental consciousness in our
graduates through design thinking and problem solving.
