Chemical Equations Practice

Directions: Write and balance the following chemical equations. Then, determine the type of
chemical reaction represented by each equation.
1. Potassium reacts with chlorine to yield potassium chloride.
2 K + Cl2 2 KCl

Type of chemical reaction: Synthesis

Explain how you determined the products and reactants and their coefficients.
Because potassium and chlorine are reacting with one another, I knew that these
were the reactants. Then, because potassium chloride was yielded from this
reaction, I knew this was the product. I figured out the coefficients for the products
and the reactants because I knew that the amounts of each element have to be equal
on both sides of the equation.

Explain how you determined what type of chemical reaction is occurring.

I determined that this reaction is a synthesis reaction because there are two
reactants that are being used to form one product. In other words, two smaller
molecules are combining to form a bigger compound.

2. Silver (I) nitrate reacts with aluminum chloride to yield silver (I) chloride and aluminum
nitrate.
3AgNO3 + AlCl3 3AgCl + Al(NO3)3

Type of chemical reaction: Double replacement

Explain how you determined the products and reactants and their coefficients.
I figured out that the reactants were silver (I) nitrate and aluminum chloride
because they were the compounds being reacted. As a result, I knew that silver (I)
chloride and aluminum nitrate were the products because they were what was being
yielded from the two compounds reacting with one another. I determined the
coefficients for the reactants and products because I knew that the amounts of each
element have to be equal on both sides of the equation.

Explain how you determined what type of chemical reaction is occurring.

I knew that this reaction was a double replacement because Ag and Al switched
places with one another to get the products that were formed. Because an element
in each compound changed, I knew it was a double replacement reaction.
