Lesson Plan #3

Name: Ashten Elmore

Date: 11/12/17
Content Area: Matter
Grade Level: 6th
Standards of Learning (SOLs):
Standard 6.1
The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and
the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations in which
models and simulations are designed and used to illustrate and explain
phenomena and systems; and
current applications are used to reinforce science concepts.
Standard 6.4
The student will investigate and understand that all matter is made up of atoms.
Key concepts include:
atoms consist of particles, including electrons, protons, and neutrons.

Lesson Title and Major Concepts : Parts of an atom

Objectives (KUDs)
a. Students will know what a proton, neutron, and electron is.
b. Students w ill understand the parts of an atom.
c. Students w ill create a model atom. (Blooms Taxonomy: create)
Essential Questions (Use one of the NOS)
What is an atom?
Where can you find the protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom?
How do you find the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons?
What is a nucleus?
What is an electron cloud?
What can observations can be made between different atom models? (NOS)
Materials & Resources
Parts of an atom worksheet
Construction paper
Beads
Scissors
Glue
Markers
Textbooks with periodic table

Safety Considerations
Watch kids with scissors
ensure they do not run or play with them
5E Model
Engage (Time: 5 minutes )
Talk about essential questions and ask for students answers.

Explore (Time: 6 minutes )
Use computers to explore what answers could be for the essential questions.
They may work with partners. When they find an answer they must write down
answer and website name. They must make sure the answer is coming from a
credible website.
Explain (Time: 10 minutes )
Discuss key terms
Atom: smallest unit of matter and cannot be broken down.
Protons: positively charged particles found in the nucleus. Same number
as the atomic number of an element.
Neutrons: neutral (no charge) particles found in the nucleus. Atomic
number minus rounded atomic mass equals the number of neutrons.
Electrons: negatively charged particles found moving about the electron
cloud. same number as the atomic number of an element.
Nucleus: center of atom, contains protons and neutrons
Electron cloud: Space around nucleus where electrons move around.
Explore (Time: 20 minutes )
Parts of an atom worksheet (20 minutes)
They can work with a partner to complete this worksheet. They must
follow directions on the top of the worksheet.
Explain (Time: 7 minutes )
Each table group that they are sitting with will work together to put one answer
on the board. I will use this to evaluate if each table is understanding how to
draw and atom and find the protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Explore (Time: 25 minutes)
Atom model hands on activity. (25 minutes)
Students will be given a rubric (see sheet) with all everything then must
include in their model. Teacher will explain what they will do. They will
choose a number between 5-20 to determine which element they will be
making an atom model of. They will use different color beads for the
protons, neutrons, and electrons. They will use different color pieces of
paper to make nucleus and electron cloud. They will also make a key.
Trick they may not write on the atom model. (Example is given. Except
the black circle will be a bead and the green will also be a bead.
Elaborate (Time: 10 minutes)
Use this website to play around with how to make an atom model.

m-simulation?cmpid=CMP00003366
Evaluate (Time: 7 minutes )
Exit ticket on the element Beryllium. They will tell me how many protons,
neutrons, and electrons it has and draw a model of the element.
Questions for Future Assessment
1. How many protons, neutrons, and electrons are in the element of oxygen.
Protons: ______8____
Neutrons: _____8____
Electrons: ____8______

2. What is an atom and what does it consist of?

Smallest unit of matter and it cannot be broken down. It consist of particles called protons,
neutrons, and electrons.
Plans for Diversity
ELL students: May change settings on computer to their native language if needed. The option
to have their lab sheet put into a different language but answers should be in English. (Ask for
help)
Disability: May ask questions and will be placed with others without disabilities to help when
needed.
Medical: Type answers if necessary. Make accommodations based on reason.
Other accommodations may be made based on reason for needing one.

Connections
This is day 2 of the unit plan on matter. Students will use this information for the next day's activity.
