basic dierence between energy and power. Energy can be kinetic , potential, chemical etc.
Let us focus only on kinetic and potential energy. Potential energy can be in many form like How come the head of a pump is independent of the

velocity. Everyday, we see many examples of kinetic and potential energy and their
transformation. E.g. throwing ball in air, free motion of pendulum, bow action , etc. What is meant by a 'dead head' in regards to pumps?

Sum of kinetic and potential energy is called total energy. In a friction less process the total
energy will remain constant. If we throw a ball vertical in air , we provide initial kinetic
energy to the ball. As ball goes up , ball velocity reduces (kinetic energy reduced) and ball
height from ground increases (potential energy increase). In this whole process the total
energy of ball remain constant. Now if i am throwing N number of ball per second .It mean i
am spending some work per second, it is called Power.

Power = Energy given to ball in single throw x N

There are many such examples .

In hydrodynamics energy is represented as head of water column per unit volume. Pressure
head is the potential energy in form of pressure and Velocity head is the kinetic energy in
form of velocity of the uid.

If m kg of water is kept h meter above the ground

then potential energy of water is = mass x gravity x height of water
= mgh
potential energy per unit volume = mgh/ volume of water
density = mass/volume
potential energy per unit volume = density *gravity* height

As i said before HEAD is always dened as height of water column.

Pressure Head = height of water column

It mean, if i know the value of height, i can estimate the potential energy per unit volume.

If m kg of water is running with velocity of v ,the kinetic energy can be represent as water
head

kinetic energy per unit volume = (1/2)x density x velocity^2

Velocity head = 0.5x v^2/ gravity
Total Head = Pressure Head + Velocity Head.

In ball throwing example, we need to dene number of ball thrown per second to determine
power. Similarly we need to dene how much uid we are throwing per second to
determine power.

Fluid thrown per second = mass ow rate

Power = Total Head (energy per unit volume) x mass ow rate . What is the significance of head in pump?

Lets assume that diesel of density 800 kg/m3 is stored inside the tank "A" and centrifugal
pump is used to transfer that pump to other tank "B" which is above 110 m height from the
pump at the owrate of X m3/h and the pump is working ne. Suction height of liquid is 10
m. If i look at the suction pressure it is showing 0.7848 barg and discharge pressure of the
pump is showing 8.6328 barg. So dierential presure is 7.848 bar. Let us calculate
dierential head. Dierential head=7.848/(9.81800)= 100 m.
Now, if I empty out tank "A" and ll water (density 1000 kg/m3) in place of diesel. Will this
pump transfer water up at the dierential head of 100 m with owrate X m3/h as before?
Answer is yes.
Pump will develop the same dierential head of 100 m with X m3/h.
So what is the eect of change of uid on the system?
Eect will be in its suction and discharge pressure. Now if we see suction pressure it will
show somewhat 0.981 barg and discharge pressure will show 10.791 barg.
Dierential pressure is 10.791-0.981=9.81 bar
dierential head is 9.81/(9.811000)=100 m.

If we compare both these case, for same owrate and same system, dierential pressures are
dierent but dierential heads are same.
In market, standard pumps are available which are dened for particular owrate and head
(not pressure) so that we can use it for any compatible liquid. So in the pump system, head
has very signicant role than pressure.

For the second half of the question,

Let us look at the Bernoulli's equation

It states that "For incompressible, inviscid ow, Static Pressure + Dynamic Pressure +
Hydrostatic Pressure = CONSTANT along the streamline"
Let us write it in equation form:
P+ V + hg = Constant
In this,
P = Static Pressure
V = Dynamic Pressure
hg = Hydrostatic Pressure

Dynamic pressure is nothing but kinetic energy per unit volume and hydrostatic pressure is

potential energy per unit volume.
If we divide whole equation with g we will get all the terms in meter (head)
P/g = static pressure head
V/2g = velocity head or kinetic head
h = hydrostatic head

Note that in the above example i did not consider any pressure losses just to explain the What is the significance of head in pump?
