Signature Assignment: The link between Nutrition and School success among high school

students

Arizona State University

Fall 2017
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 2

Introduction

There are specific nutrients and vitamins that our body gets from food. These nutrients

play a major role in the development and learning of students in secondary education. When

students are provided with the proper nutrition it positively affects the academic achievement in

high school students. There are six keys to overall health and those subjects include Social,

Emotional, Physical, Spiritual, Nutritional and Intellectual health. Results have respectively

revealed That malnourished children are less likely to enrol in school on time and achieve an

age-appropriate grade by 26 percentage points and 31 percentage points (Khanam, 2011). This

means that student who do not get proper meals full of nutrients will not perform as well

academically. Schools assisting with nutrition can provide a healthy breakfast or snacks.

Literature Review

Basch, Charles E. (2011). Breakfast and the Achievement Gap among Urban Minority

Youth. Journal of School Health, 81(10), 635-640.

The study started with a various group of nine year old girls and followed up with them

when they were nineteen years old. The groups varied between race/ethnicity, and

socioeconomic status. The study found that skipping breakfast greatly affected their academic

success along with attendance. Then it compared how much of a positive impact nutrition has on

students when the school offers a reduced lunch program. The article offered percentages of

students who skip breakfast, participate in reduced meals, and students who actually ate

breakfast. It also offered some suggestions to make the reduced breakfast successful.

They offer a lot of local information about school health and promotions. They talk about

what is offered for schools to use and how to apply for services. There are various links to other

articles that help understand the benefits of schools promoting health. THis website is a great

resource that provides a lot of information and where school can get assistance for things like

reduced lunch. The CDC also promotes healthy eating and how is positively affects a student's

academic performance.

Khanam, R., Nghiem, H., & Rahman, M. (2011). THE IMPACT OF CHILDHOOD

MALNUTRITION ON SCHOOLING: EVIDENCE FROM BANGLADESH. Journal of

Biosocial Science, 43(4), 437-451.

The purpose of this paper examines how malnutrition affects schooling from rural

Bangladesh. They wanted to see how a childs health will have a lifelong effect on their

education as they enter high school. There was a study performed and it was entitled

Macronutrient and Gender study, and it was administered by the International Food Policy

Research Institute. The study was administered at three different sites (villages), from there

participants were random selections of representatives per village. Then households were

randomly selected totalling 5541 individuals from 957 households and 47 villages. The results

revealed that malnutrition did have a slight effect on the students but there were other factor that

had a bigger contributor. However the study did show that children who come from a wealthier

home tend to perform better and that seemed to be based on their access to appropriate nutrition

and health service. It was determined that healthy meals including breakfast helps the student

perform better in the classroom.

Optimism for the Future. Australian Journal of Education, 56(1), 5-21.

SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 4

The purpose of this study was to look at the lifelong effects overall health has on children

as they become adults. They looked at Indigenous and nonindigenous communities along with

possible incentives that both communities can benefit from. This study compared both groups of

students year in school along with the core categories of academics. The results and finding came

from a collaboration of other studies that were placed into one article. The results showed that

Indigenous students who were in high school had a greater disadvantage to proper nutrition along

with their overall health. This means that Indigenous students did not perform as well as the Non

Indigenous students. However they do point out how other aspects affect ones health like their

social emotional barriers, access to healthcare, and exposure to certain illness.

Ward, D., Vaughn, A., Bangdiwala, K., Campbell, M., Jones, D., Panter, A., & Stevens,

J. (2011). Integrating a family-focused approach into child obesity prevention: Rationale

and design for the My Parenting SOS study randomized control trial. BMC Public

Health, 11, 431.

This study talked about a different aspect of health, obesity. The study talked about how

this aspect of weight can affect a students academic performance. This means that not providing

the proper nutrients also has a negative effect on students. Once again parents fail to notice or

provide a healthy example of overeating. For this study they used a 35 week My parenting SOS

intervention. 12 of the sessions targeted the parents and helping educate about obesity. Then the

next phase is using the learned information with the child and parent. In the end they talk about

and discuss the effects of overall health has an effect on children especially as they get older.

Synthesis of Information

When looking at all four articles for my paper they had a common theme of discussing

how overall health can greatly improve a students academic performance. Two of the articles
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 5

shared a common conclusion that healthy eating habits helps with academic focus, performance,

and attendance at school. The article, Breakfast and the Achievement gap among urban

minority youth along with the website research both talked about the benefits of using a reduced

lunch program. This would mean meals offered at the school can be offered at a reduced price.

Another article about malnutrition talked about the importance of nutrition and children however

their study was based on an overall viewpoint. This meant that nutrition plays a big role into

academic success however there are also other factors that could have a great effect on their

academic results.

The last article was about a study based on children obesity. They had a different outline

of their article but the main topic about nutrition and how it affects children were the same. It

brings up another great point that deals with nutrition. Obesity can also have a negative effect on

nutrition which can also affect a student's ability to succeed in the classroom.

In conclusion all of the articles support the fact that nutrition supports children through

school and it betters their performance. A couple of sources mentioned the importance of

breakfast so students can start the day focused and ready to learn. Other sources focus on the

overall nutrition at school and home so the students body is being fueled with the correct

nutrients to be healthy. Nutrition gives their bodies the nutrients they need for overall growth and

development. When focusing on nutrition there are multiple sides along with the good and bad.

Good nutrition will be the one children benefit from the most.

Practical Implications

To support healthy nutrition for the students at Red Mountain High School I would

administer pre evaluation forms about student and staff overall health. This would include

questions about their diet, hours of sleep, and exercise. I would have monthly newsletters about
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 6

reduced meal program along with a monthly menu. In the newsletter I will also include facts

about how nutrition helps with academic success. There will also be a reminder about the healthy

snacks being offered in my classroom. This happens twice a month, healthy snack time in study

hall includes a variety of healthy snack available while the students have the option to do

homework with staff assistance. Study Hall takes place four times a week after second hour for

30 minutes.

Committee

A factor of success is making sure I establish a committee and have the support of other

staff. In order to start any program on a campus I would need to get the administration approval.

I would present the information I have collected about the connection of nutrition and higher

academic success among high school students. This could be a presentation to administration,

staff, parents, and students. I will discuss the information about reduce meal plans including

requirements, registration, and continuing support. Then I will talk about the healthy snack

program that will be offered during study hall. In this presentation the program will be explained

along with its benefits, purpose, benefits, and rules. In order to run this program and I will need a

committee who will help throughout the school year and to keep it running successfully. My

supervisor, the special education site leader will be an advocate on my behalf she is the

supervisor who is also in charge and sign off of documents when needed. There is a group of

staff who have joined my team to help with the study hall. They will all have a monthly rotating

schedule. Each department of the school have agreed to help with a couple of healthy snack

items. Parents are always more than welcome to donate snack item for study hall. All of these

people will be apart of my committee who will help keep this healthy program running.

Funding
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 7

In order to provide the funding for the reduced meal program I have looked into the

School breakfast program (SBP) which is offered through the Health and Nutrition Services in

the state of Arizona. When I work with my committee we will put in the application before the

school year so its ready by the first day of school. When these program are set Im able to add

flyers to the parent/student back to school packet or at open house at the beginning of the school

year. That is where the funding will come from for the reduced meals. The snacks provided

during study hall are all donations from the special education department, school staff, and

parents. If needed I will be writing a donation letter to Bashas for their local support in healthy

snacks. The more people I include and reach out to the more help I can get to join my committee.

Education

The educational components displayed will come from the article research I have done

along with the information from the Arizona Health and Nutrition services guidelines. The

research and information put together will be presented to the administration, students, parents,

and staff. Over the months of school I will add education information that link healthy nutrition

to the student's academic progress. While I conduct the reduced meals program and healthy

snack time I will have each student sign into study hall. Then each quarter I will track their

progress with the utilization of the study hall room. I believe this will support my theory of how

nutrition can lead to higher achievement among high school students.

Marketing

During the year a student teacher from Arizona State University will be conducting

organized activities during both lunch periods. At this time games will be played inside the

school gym. We have meet with one another and agreed to support and promote one anothers

program. Nutrition and exercise are all apart of healthy living for the high school students and
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 8

community. Providing these types of resources for the students teaches them healthy living and

could be something they can carry home. The more people involved with the program helps with

sustainability and continuing for the following years.

Creating a well developed program requires hard working committee members. I have

put together a solid team of administration, teachers, parents, and student. I have monthly

newsletter that promote nutrition, study hall, and the links to higher educational achievement.

The information will be put together by my committee along with a rotating monthly schedule so

one person is not doing all the work. Keeping the schedule well organized will keep the program

running smoothly. If I keep track of the students we service along with their academic progress

this will give solid evidence that will promote the programs.

Conclusion

Promoting and supporting a healthy diet is important at any age. A healthy breakfast is a

good start to any students day. Among high school students there is a close relation between of

how well students perform academically and how their healthy diet is. This can be promoted at

home, within the community, and school. To plan this event I would need the help and support of

the high school staff and administration. If students are allowed some study time along with the

choice to have breakfast/snack it can help them throughout the day. When students miss

breakfast they might not be focused and it could lead to other behavioral problems. During this

time high school students will get the chance to feed their growing bodies the nutrients that will

help with their learning throughout the day. In the future I see this program running with the

special education and school staff. When a sign-in log is kept and grades, attendance, and

behavior reports are kept this will show the positive effect on how my program deals with high

school students and their academic success. This program is already set to be implemented in the
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 9

next school year and have plans to continue. I was unable to put together the physical aspect of

this project because my committee would not support that particular activity within a classroom.

This would be too much of a liability since the classroom is too small and they were unable to

grant another space for me to conduct these activities. Despite this setback the nutritional section

will continue to be used in the future and continuing. This includes the lion time, which is about

thirty minute after second hour where students can have breakfast/snacks and study with staff

support. Even though only a portion of this program was successful Im excited to see the other

parts continuing to run for the further years to come.
