1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.
You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.
You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a
common theme or issue.

Brief Literature Review:

Even though there are some conflict between the researches I read, there are common agreement on the
advantages and disadvantages of the distance education that I will share.
One analysis by some of the researches from the eastern and central European higher education institution
states that Seemingly, the advantages of distance education model described in the literature are often not
demanded and lead to dissatisfaction of consumers. According to their research, 6.4% of the traditional
students are satisfied with the model while only 42% are completely satisfied with the distance education
study 32%of which would prefer the traditional form of education. The research basically claim that the main
reason is the insufficiency of faceto-face communication with the lecturer and lack of practical studies. The
necessity of motivation and self-control during the study process and practical exercises are other main
disadvantages according to the study. There are some other studies that mainly focus on the advantages
though. John S. Knox from Macquarie Universitys findings shows that there are many benefits of the
distance education for the language teachers who choose to study by distance, and e-learning technologies
have enhanced these benefits. Especially the applied linguistics by distance gives the students more
opportunity and flexibility to study. According to their survey, flexibility, situated learning, learner control are
considered basic advantages. The disadvantages are little or no actual teaching, little feedback, and reading
a book or writing too much.
Some researches discuss the challenges and opportunities of online career counseling. The article from
Capella University claims that the advantages are increased access, scaled services, customized content,
advanced technology, and skill based professional opportunities while the challenges listed as the contend
management, accessibility to the on campus resources, and employer relations. It is a fact that the demand
on the distance education keeps increasing which make the individuals a lifelong learner. Study from the Dr.
Yilmaz finds points out some of the restriction form the point of the educators view. He states that the
evaluation of the student success is one of the main restriction and the educators should more factors to
evaluate the student success.
Overall, according to the studies, there are more advantages of the distance education than that of
diadvantages. The time management and self awareness is the key to improve the maximum benefit of the
distance education.

Reflection:

I think there are more benefits of the distance education than disadvantages. The flexibility, cost, and
availablility are appealing. The key to success is the self responsibility and time management. Todays
increasing technology makes the resources available so there is no need to go to a campus everyday to
access them. Instead, using personal technologic devices, one can reach even more resources online. I
agree some of the disadvantages though. The distance education is not suitable for advance content areas
such as medical, or science, because the student need more interaction with the educator and need more
lecturing. The hands on activities, simulations, and other experiments can only be done on campus where
the educational materials exists.
I would implement the research by considering the evaluation process thoroughly. I would consider the oral,
written, time management, and other communication skills. Currently, being a full time worker, I am taking
advantage of the distance education that is more effordable and flexible for me.
