1970s
History of Hip-Hop
It all started on August 11, 1973 in the Bronx, New York. A DJ named Kool Herc began hosting back to school
parties in their building. As the parties became more popular, Kool Herc looked for new ways to improve it other
than just playing beats he was making.

He brought his friend, Coke La Rock, out to rap at the party. His first bar was, Theres not a man that cant be
thrown, not a horse that cant be rode, a bull that cant be stopped, theres not a disco that I Coke La Rock cant
rock. He then became known as the first hip-hop rapper, birthing the genre.

Sugar Hill Gang
By 1979, six years later, hip-hop rap was spreading and starting to become more
mainstream. Sugar Hill Gangs song, Rapper's Delight, is considered to be the
song that introduced hip-hop to America.

In 1980, Rappers Delight broke through and appeared on the top 40 billboard.
Also, the song was ranked 251 on Rolling Stones list of The 500 Greatest Songs
of All Time.

This song was recorded in a single take.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5
Grandmaster Flash learned from Kool Herc and
started competing against him. He also began
hosting parties to display his music and become
more popular.

He created a rap group called the Furious 5 and

became the face of hip-hop music.

His most influential song, The Message, came out

in 1982. It was the first hip-hop song to provide
social commentary, rather than partying music. It

Run D-M-C
Run-D.M.C. took hardcore hip-hop from an underground street sensation to a pop-culture phenomenon.

Run-D.M.C.s music was sparse and raw, relying heavily upon drum machines. They also sampled rock music which increased its
audience appeal.

Run-D.M.C. continued to break barriers and help rap music become accepted by mainstream communities. In 1986 they became the first
rap group to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Raising Hell. Run-D.M.C. also was the first rap group to strike an endorsement
with a major corporation when they inked a deal with Adidas in 1986.

Their third album Raising Hell, released in 1986, would become the first rap album to achieve platinum status (selling 1,000,000
copies).

Tupac
Tupac was an American rapper and actor and began his
career as a rebel with a cause to articulate the tribulations and
injustices endured by many African Americans.

His skills made him a spokesperson for not only his generation
but for the ones who continue to face the same struggles for
equality.

Hip-Hop legend Tupac Shakur was embroiled in a feud

between East Coast and West Coast rappers and was
murdered in a drive-by shooting in 1996, leaving behind an
influential music legacy at the age of 25.

As a teenage dropout, Eminem found a way to express himself,

his youthful anger, and his passion for language through the
emerging genre of hip-hop.

A five-time Grammy
Award-winning rapper, songwriter,
dancer and producer, Missy Elliot
has consistently pushed the
boundaries of hip-hop.

She is a positive role model who

Lil Wayne
Lil Wayne influenced Hip Hop in a tremendous amount of ways.

Wayne has brought many things to the game. He used mixtapes to

promote albums, and had a unique style of making freestyles into
songs.

The most notable innovations Lil Wayne brought rap was popularizing
rapping with autotune. His album Dedication 3 consisted completely
of autotuned songs.

Lil Wayne changed hip-hop by perfecting his auto-tune rapping. Artists

such as Rich Homie Quan, Young Thug, Fetty Wap, Big Sean, Drake,
and Chris Brown have all used auto-tune when rapping. Many new
rappers now are known solely for their autotuned rapping.

In 2007, Lil Wayne was named president of Cash Money Records and
CEO of Young Money Entertainment. He signed Drake in 2009 and
brought him to fame through the record label. Throughout Waynes
time with Cash Money, he has released 10 albums.

and stopped when he began his legendary rapping career.

He signed to Lil Waynes Young Money recording label in 2007 and starting gaining fame
from there.

Drake has a unique style of rapping, with the ability to rap and sing in the same flow.

Accomplishments:

Drake has won 45 musical awards with 252 nominations

He has had 7 albums go Platinum (over 1,000,000 albums sold)

Drake became the first artist ever to log 8 straight years (431 consecutive weeks)
on the Hot 100 list.

Takeoff. They are a mainstream group out of Atlanta.

They had a few hits from 2014-2016, but they blew up in 2017 with the arrival of
the Billboard #1 Album, Culture.

The album, Culture, went Platinum (1,000,000 albums sold) within four months.

Changes in Hip-hop since the 1970s
The Internet, and in particular the role of social media, has become a reflection of societal
development. Prior to the rise of social media, an artists sole purpose of establishing a fan
base was to capture the attention of a record label.

Also, the music used to only be available through the radio or CDs. In todays time, we have
many different ways of hearing whatever song we want. Through our smartphones and
internet, we have unlimited music access at any time.
Contd
The most striking difference between old Hip-Hop rap music and more modern tracks is the
lyrics. In general, hip-hop in the previous decade had a narratively narrow focus where
songs were less about an artists success and more about the rise to it.

- Content revolved around violence, crime and living in poverty.

Rap lyrics in later generations tell and artists story. More and more rappers moved away
from gangsta rap and towards developing their individuality as artists.
