The Stigmas of Mental Health

Student Teacher: Jake Ratcliffe Grade level: Year 10

Subject: Mental Health Lesson Title: The Stigmas of Mental Health

Goal:
The students will be able to understand the common Stigmas surrounding Mental Health. They
will also be given the tools to assess their own Mental Health.

Health and Physical Education Level 9 They describe mental health issues relevant to young
people. Students identify outcomes of risk-taking behaviours and evaluate harm-minimization
strategies. They identify the health concerns of young people and the strategies that are
designed to improve their health. They describe the health resources, products and services
available for young people and consider how they could be used to improve health.

Preassessment Strategy: The teacher will use the white board to facilitate a discussion in order
to gauge the students understand of the word Stigma and common stigmas they have
seen/heard in everyday life.

Assessment Strategy: Stigmas worksheet, Class discussion, Pair discussion and share, common
stigmas discussion.

Instructional Procedure

Access Prior Knowledge


Using the whiteboard, the students and teacher will conduct a class discussion based on the
students understanding of the word stigma and how stigmas affect young people. Write some
common examples on the board in order to aid the students in the discussion,

Encourages students to talk about their issue in order to help manage them.

1 in 4 suffer from a mental health problem
Social Stigma attached to Mental Health which can make it difficult to get help
Mental Health is an Illness not a weakness, an issue, not and identity.
Application/Analysis
Students will be given a worksheet on Stigmas surrounding Mental health (Activity 1)
The worksheet has 10 questions
Each question can be answered as Agree, Disagree or Not Sure.
Compile results
Using a show of hands, have the list of answers compiled on the whiteboard

Generalize
Ask students to share some general observations about the groups results. For
example, only half the people surveyed agreed that they would have someone with a
mental illness as a close friend; most people believe that medication for life is the best
treatment.
Compare the answers to the list provided of (most suitable answers)

Formative Assessments included Group discussions, Stigmas Worksheet and the Video
worksheet.

Accommodations for All Learners:

ELL: Class discussion, worksheets and video are straight forward but require reflection within,
which accommodates for all languages and has no limit.

Gifted: Class discussion, worksheets and video are straight forward but require reflection
within, which accommodates for all languages and has no limit.

Lower Level: Video worksheet can be adjusted to accommodate learning capabilities. Group
discussion and worksheet to accommodate all levels.
