Disadvantages Mutations:
Fragile hollow bones (-10) Any damage sustained during grappling is doubled.
Commonly: Claustrophobia (-10+) Uintah are extremely claustrophobic and will not willingly enter a cave,
building, or other enclosed area.
Insular (-10) Uintah have little to do with other species, including neighboring tribes, and leave their home
territory only in extreme circumstances. They rarely encounter humans except for an occasional foray into a
rural community to snatch a stray farm animal.

Advantages
Flight: this allows them to avoid pits, bypass walls, and avoid or overtake enemies with ease.
Unencumbered, Uintah fly at 12 MPH, or 96 miles a day; each 5 lbs. weight carried reduces this by 1 mph.
Turn radius is 10 body-lengths. Flying requires almost no effort for the bird-men; they can sometimes
remain aloft for up to a day at a time. +30

Uintah (Ute, Pai-Ute, and other related tribes, hereafter referred to as Uintah simply for ease) are small and light because flying is difficult for large or heavy creatures.
Like normal flying birds, the Uintah have hollow bones, which largely accounts for their minimal weight. The Uintah are a race of sentient avians who inhabit
mountainous regions. A Uintah is vaguely humanoid in appearance, resembling a human-sized, bipedal eagle whose wings fold into overlong arms. Plumage varies
from tribe to tribe and region to region, and also varies with respect to gender; the males are always crested and gaudier than the females, generally red, orange, and
yellow, while females tend towards brown and gray.. Within the race, Uintah plumage serves no purpose other than a means for identification. Their faces are birdlike,
except that the eyes are placed frontally to provide binocular vision. Facial shape varies little; the bird-men identify their peers by their plumage, not by their faces.
They are a reclusive race, living far from humanity and civilization. They have a racial distaste for enclosed places and underground environments.

Halfway along the edge of each wing is a hand with three human-sized fingers and an opposable thumb. An elongated fourth finger extends the length of the wing and
locks in place during flight. The hands cannot grasp while flying, but are nearly as useful as human hands when a Uintah is perched and its wings folded back. Their
powerful legs end in four sharp talons that can unlock and fold back to reveal another pair of functional hands. These "netherhands" are used for fighting when in flight,
but serve as feet when on the ground. Consequently, having four hands does not affect their number of attacks per round, although while resting on their backs, Uintah
can use all four hands at the same time to weave and perform similar tasks.
Uintah live among the highest mountain peaks in small tribes which control hunting territories and share a communal nest, spending their days soaring on the thermal
winds in peace and solitude. Uintah speak an Uto-Aztecan language, and, often, the common tongue (Spanish, Spanglish, or English, or some dialect).

In aerial combat, a Uintah fights with talons or the heavy fletched javelins that he clutches in his lower hands. A Uintah typically carries a half dozen javelins strapped
to his chest in individual sheaths. The javelins can be used for throwing or stabbing. A Uintah will always save its last javelin for stabbing purposes rather than throwing
it. A favored attack is to dive at a victim while clutching a javelin in each hand, then pull out of the dive just as it reaches its target, and strike with a blood-curdling
shriek. This attack gains a +1 bonus to the attack roll and causes double damage, but a Uintah must dive at least 200 feet to execute it properly. They are able to use
foot-bows or any hand-held or thrown weapon, but are not able to use hand-bows or slings. Uintah are so accustomed to battles in the sky that they are unaffected by the
usual penalties for any sort of aerial missile fire. A Uintah is reluctant to engage in grappling or ground combat, since its fragile bones are easily broken. Though rarely
used except when cornered, a Uintah's sharp beak can bite for 1-3 points of damage. Normal armor does not fit bird-men; they must custom-make their protection. Since
it interferes with flight, they tend towards lighter armors tailored to essential coverage only. Light chain byrnies with slits for the wings and similar cut leather are most
common, when armor is used at all. Five Uintah, including a shaman, can summon an air elemental by chanting and performing an intricate aerial dance for several
minutes.

Each tribe has a hunting territory of about 10,000 square miles with colorful banners and pennants marking the boundaries.
