alloying, constitutional diagrams, their construction and applications.

UNIT III
Non-metallic Materials Non-metals Glass, Enamels, graphite, wood, plastics, rubber, ebonite lining
materials, composite materials: fiber reinforced plastic composite material, concrete, asphalt and asphalt

INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL KINETICS: General Mole balance equation, Homogeneous and
Heterogeneous reaction rates, rate constants, stoichiometry, reactor mass balance, temperature and
concentration dependence of rate of reaction, Constant-volume and varying-volume systems, search for a
reaction mechanism and consequent deduction of rate expression.

UNIT II
BATCH REACTORS:Constant pressure and volume batch reactors, Interpretation of batch data,
Differential and integral methods of analysis, Regression analysis in fitting kinetic models.

UNIT III
CONTINUOUS REACTORS:CSTR & PFR, Performance equations, Space velocity & space time,
Comparison between Batch reactors, CSTR & PFR, Recycle reactor, Tubular reactors.

UNIT IV
ENERGY BALANCES FOR REACTORS:Energy balance equation, Non-isothermal reactions, Qualitative
discussion of optimum temperature progression, simultaneous solutions of material and energy balances for
reactor design, and multiple steady states of adiabatic CSTR.

UNIT V
BASICS OF NON IDEAL FLOW:Residence Time Distribution (RTD), RTD of ideal reactors, Earliness
of mixing, Conversion in non ideal flow reactors, tanks in series models.

UNIT-1
DIFFUSION IN FLUIDS: Ficks law of diffusion, equimolecular counter diffusion, diffusion in stationary
gas, maxwells law of diffusion. Inter phase mass transfer, mass transfer equilibrium, diffusion between
two phases. Local mass transfer coefficients, Local and average mass transfer coefficients. Simultaneous
heat and mass transfer.

UNIT-2
DISTILATION-I:Basic concepts of distillation, principles, Classification, types, total reflux, minimum
reflux ratio, optimum reflux ratio, Raoults law, Henrys law, multistage continuous rectification.

UNIT-3
DISTILLATION-II: Design calculations by McCabe-Thiele and Ponchon-Savarit methods, continuous
contact distillation tower design: extractive & azeotropic distillation, low pressure distillation: Steam,
reactive & membrane distillation, calculation of actual number of stages, NTU & HTU calculations.

UNIT IV
LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION: Liquid-Liquid extraction: Liquid-liquid equilibrium, Different types of
extractors: selection, construction, sizing & operations. Calculation with and without reflux for immiscible
and partially miscible system.

UNIT-5
EQUIPMENTS FOR GAS-LIQUID OPERATIONS: Sparged vessel/Bubble column, Mechanically
agitated vessels for gas liquid contact, Tray towers, type of trays, flow arrangements on tray, tray
efficiency. Venturi scrubbers, wetted wall tower, spray tower, spray chamber, packed tower, Mass transfer
coefficients for packed tower, types of packing.

UNIT I
INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL INDUSTRY:Chemical industries facts and figures, concept of unit
operations and unit processes. General principle involved studying a chemical industry, manufacture and
applications of fuel gases and industrial gases- producer gas, water gas, coke oven gas, Carbureted gas or
oil gas, Natural gas and LPG, Synthesis gas, Acetylene.

UNIT II
ACIDS & ALKALIS:Manufacture of soda ash, caustic soda, chlorine, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric,
phosphoric acid, nitric acid.

UNIT III
NATURAL PRODUCT PROCESSING:Production of pulp, paper & rayon. Manufacture of sugar, starch
& starch derivatives. Fermentation processes for production of ethyl alcohol. Refining of edible oil & facts,
fatty acids. Soaps & detergents.

UNIT IV
FERTILIZER & CEMENT INDUSTRIES:Nitrogen fertilizers- synthetic ammonia- Urea- Ammonium
chloride- CAN- Ammonium sulphate- Phosphorous fertilizers- Phosphate rock- Super phosphate- Triple
Super phosphate- MAP & DAP, Cement-Types of Portland cement, methods of production.

UNIT V
COAL, COAL CHEMICALS & PETROLEUM:Occurrence- coking of coal, distillation of coal tar,
gasification of coal, hydrogenation of coal. Petroleum- occurrence & chemical composition. Petroleum
refinery products. Types of refineries. Refining processes- physical changes & chemical changes like
pyrolysis & cracking, reforming, polymerization etc.
