THEINTERNATIONALOBOECOMPETITIONOFJAPANbeganwithanideabytheformerchairman
oftheSonyMusicFoundation,NorioOhga(19302011),whowasintriguedbytheinnocentandcomforting
soundoftheoboeandadvocateditsimportanceastheinstrumentthatcoulddeterminethequalityofan
entireorchestra.TheSonyMusicFoundationhasbeenpresentingtheCompetitioneverythreeyearssince
1985.Itaimstopromotethetrueartisticvalueoftheoboe,aswellastocontributetothedevelopmentof
musicculturewithaninternationalperspectivethroughdiscoveringandfosteringtalentedmusiciansand
helpingthemexpandtheirscopeofactivitiesinJapanandabroad.Ithasestablishedareputationasaunique
internationalCompetitionsolelydedicatedtotheoboe,withpastwinnersgoingontobecomeinternational
musicfigureswhohaveobtainedprincipalandsolopositionsinworldrenownedorchestras.Thefirstseven
CompetitionswereheldinTokyo.Startingwiththe8thCompetitionin2006,ithasbeenheldatKaruizawa
Ohga Hall in Nagano prefecture. The Competition marked its 30th anniversary in 2015. The 12th
Competition will be held in Tokyo in 2018. The Competition is a member of the World Federation of
InternationalMusicCompetitions.

PreliminaryScreening(closedtothepublic)

In order to select the contestants for the First Round, Preliminary Screening will be done by way of
reviewingthesubmittedmaterials,describedinII3.
The Preliminary Screening will be done by the Jury Chairman, as well as by the Jury members who
resideinJapan.Itwillbeablindscreeningprocess,sonoapplicantsinformationwillbedisclosedto
theJurymembersatthetimeofthescreening.

TheresultsofthePreliminaryScreeningwillbeprovidedtoallapplicantsviaemail,aimingfornolater
thanJune15(Fri.),2018.IfyoudonotreceiveyourresultbyJune17(Sun.),pleasecontacttheSecretariat
viaemail.AnyinquiriesregardingthePreliminaryScreeningwillnotbeansweredpriortothatdate.

. COMPETITIONPARTICIPATION
ParticipationFee

ThosewhohavepassedthePreliminaryScreeningmustremitJPY20,000sothatthemoneyarrivesin
thedesignatedbankaccountbyJuly13(Fri.),2018.
ThebankremittancechargeshallbebornebytheSecretariat.
Thefee,oncepaid,isnotrefundableunderanycircumstances.

Registrationforparticipation,Drawingtodeterminetheorderofperformance,andReception

ThecontestantsfortheFirstRoundmustregisterforparticipationonSeptember26(Wed.),2018,atthe
registrationsiteinTokyodesignatedbytheSecretariat.Areceptionwillfollowtheregistration,atwhich
timeadrawingwillbeheldtodeterminetheorderofperformances.Theorderofperformances,once
decided,willbeappliedtotheentireCompetition.
Thecontestantsmustattendtheregistration,thedrawing,andthereception.

Stipendforthosecomingfromabroad

ThosewhoresideoutsideJapanandcome/returntoJapanfortheCompetitionshallreceiveastipend
asstatedbelowinJapaneseyencashuponregistrationforparticipation,ifdeemedapplicablebythe
Secretariat.

Astipendwillnotbeprovidedifacontestantcomes/returnstoJapanwithoutintentiontogobackto
theplaceofresidenceforacertainperiodoftimeand/orwiththepurposeotherthanparticipationin
theCompetition.

The applicable region should be the place of embarkation/disembarkation for participation in the
Competition.

 Accommodationexpenses

TheSecretariatwillpayforaccommodations(i.e.basicroomchargeofonesingleroomforoneperson)
and distribute a certain amount of money for breakfast for the period stated below, as long as the
contestantstaysatthehoteldesignatedbytheSecretariat.

contestantsintheFinalRound.
- TheSecretariatwilldeterminethedetails,suchastimeandplaceofrehearsalswiththepianoand
harpsichordaccompanists,theorchestra,theconductor,andthechambermusicians.
- ItisnotguaranteedthatthesameaccompanistwillbeassignedfortheFirstRound,SecondRound,
FinalRound,andPrizeWinners&JuryConcert,whichtakesplacefollowingtheFinalRound.

PrizeWinners&JuryConcert

- The winners (of the top three prizes, in principle) must perform at the Prize Winners & Jury

- There is no fee to be paid to the Prize Winners for this concert. The travel and accommodation
expensesnecessaryinthisrespectshallbebornebytheSecretariat.

- The Committee will decide on the pieces that will be performed from among the Required
Repertoire(describedlater)thatthewinnersperformedattheCompetition.Itmaysuggestwhich
sectionoftherepertoiretoperform.

[A]Contestant/Participant
AnapplicantwhohaspassedthePreliminaryScreeningandpaidtheparticipationfeeisreferredtoas
acontestant.He/shewillbereferredtoasaparticipantifhe/shefailstoproceedtothenextround.

Once an applicant has paid the participation fee and becomes a contestant, he/she should notify the
Secretariat of the required information, such as his/her choice of required repertoire for the Second
Roundandtheperformingorder,aswellasrequestsforaccommodationsandaccompanists,byfilling
outtheLetterofConfirmationsentfromtheSecretariat.

[B]Visa

The contestant and/or the accompanist is/are responsible for obtaining the visa/s to enter Japan, as
necessary.Fordocumentsrequiredforavisaapplication,pleasecontacttheSecretariat.

[C]Insurance

Thecontestantand/ortheaccompanistis/areresponsibleforobtaininginsuranceagainstillness,aswell
asaccidents,fire,theft,damagetobelongings(includinghis/herinstrument),and/orotherliabilitiesfor
theentireperiodoftheCompetition.

[D]Copyrights

Anyrightsincludingneighboringrightsrelatedtophotographing,recording,filming,andbroadcasting
ofallperformancesduringtheCompetitionincludingthePrizeWinners&JuryConcert,whichtake
placeonthedayfollowingtheFinalandthedayafter,willbelongtotheSecretariat.

[E]PresentationofthePerformances

AlltheroundsofthisCompetitionareopentothepublic,exceptforthepreliminaryscreening.

TheFirst,Second,andFinalRounds,aswellastheAwardPresentationCeremony,maybebroadcast
live and/or recorded on TV, radio, and/or the Internet (including YouTube and so forth), and the
contestantsandaccompanistswillagreetosuchbroadcasting.
