Dear Dr. Bruce,
While taking this class I have improved on my scientific writing skills as well as learning
to write more professionally. Throughout this semester we have constantly been introduced to
student learning outcomes (SLO) that are meant to help improve on our writing techniques. We
have completed many assignments and activities that complete one or multiple SLOs. To
demonstrate that I have improved on my writing abilities I have made a portfolio consisting of a
revised progress report, group charter and a peer review of our group charter that complete each
SLO.
I chose to revise my progress report because it completes most of the student learning
outcomes. This assignment completes the first SLO which is rhetorical focus. Rhetorical focus is
completed through prewriting, which defines who my audience will be as well as the purpose of
the assignment. For this assignment my audience was Dr. Bruce and my purpose was to inform
and persuade my audience. This used to be a major obstacle for me before taking English 360
because I am not always mindful of my audience. This SLO has helped me to think about who
my audience is and what my purpose for writing is. This assignment also completes SLO 3
which is persuasion because this assignment requires me to persuade my audience that our group
was meeting each goal on time and we were not falling behind or meeting any major obstacles.
SLO 5 is language and design and is completed through my use of appropriate professional
language and following Markels progress report format. My organization, which completes SLO
4, of my progress report uses headings such as Purpose, Summary, Completed Tasks, ect.. to
clearly show the audience what each paragraph should consist of.
The next assignment I chose was my team charter which masters ethical design as well as
language and design. SLO 2 is completed through our ethical citation, we properly incorporate
Wolfe and Markels writings into our group charter and properly cite their work in our reference
sheet. We use professional language throughout our group charter and properly followed Dr.
Bruces format for our group charter. We created proper headings for each section in our charter
and clearly organized our information into bullet points. This assignment also completed the
SLO 6 which is collaboration. In my groups team charter, it clearly says what each person will
be responsible for. It shows that we collaborated and worked together to complete the group
charter.
Throughout this semester wee have had many opportunities to master each SLO and I
feel confident that I have improved on my scientific writing skills through these SLOs. I feel that
these SLOs will help prepare me for professional wring that I will be completing in my career. I
hope you feel the same way about my writing improvements after reviewing my collection of
documents and portfolio.
