Objective 2: understand the benefits of assessment for the professional in the classroom and

other child-related settings.

Understanding how assessments benefits the professional in the classroom and another child-

related setting is something important to know. As a future child-care professional, it is

understood that I will be using assessments in the classroom with children on the regular basis.

So, this objective answer the question what could child-care professionals gain from

assessment?. This helps me better understand each child individually and also myself as a

professional. It helps me find better ways to support the children in the classroom and what

teaching strategies I could improve on. It is important for teachers to get to know their children,

and to understand the level in which they are developing.

To understand the benefits of assessment for professionals in the classroom, I have

learned a variety of assessment techniques. I learned to observe children using running records

and anecdotal notes, and how to interpret those observations to understand the childrens current

and emerging skills. I have learned how to develop and implement a checklist to observe skills of

children. I have learned how to develop learning opportunities for children to build on their

emerging skills with extensions and simplifications to support their skills. I have learned the

importance of formal assessments and how beneficial it could be to the child-care professional. I

also have learned to observe challenging behaviors of children using the Tally Event sampling

and Antecedent-behavior-Consequence. This is where I learned how to better support the

children in the classroom. I was able to write a follow-up recommendation to improve these

behaviors. As a teacher, it is my duty to make sure the children have the opportunity to perform

to the best of their ability with the appropriate tools, and guidance given to them. To get an
understanding of this I had to learn how to use the results given to me from assessment, and how

it helpful.

I have attached evidence, in which displays my level of understanding this objective. The first

attachment is Lab 1: Getting to know you. It shows my understanding of how to observe children

using running records and anecdotal notes, and how to interpret the results to understand

childrens current skills, emerging skills, and interest. I had the opportunity to get to know the

children in the classroom by using this assessment. I received a 6.5 out of 10 on this lab, which is

a 65%. The second attachment is in-class activity #4. This shows my knowledge on how

conducting formal assessments can be helpful to professionals and parents. I receive a 100% on

this in class activity, which shows I have increased and gained a higher level of understanding of

how professionals benefit from using assessments in the classroom. I learned that formal

assessment can give professionals insight of how a child is developing in comparison to other

children. It helps measure valid and accurate information, to determine what the professional

needs to do to better support the individual child being assessed.
