Title of Thesis : School of Planning and Architecture @ Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

S.P.A. is an all India institution with the potential to grow and double its present output in terms of
graduates and areas of specialization. Over last sixty years, the school has grown over more than ten times, in
terms of annual intake of students. Initially the school used to impart training in field of architecture at under-
graduates as well as post graduate level while presently, it trains Architects and Planners at under-graduate as
well as post graduate levels .Traditionally, the school admits both fresh graduates and professionals at
PG level. Of the several thousand professionals trained by the School so far, many are well known throughout
the national and international community for their professional excellence and integrity.

1. Thesis Statement

The project deals with is the new campus of School of Planning and Architecture located in
VasantKunj, New Delhi. At present it consists of a main administrative block in Indraprastha Estate with the
department of planning and the girls hostel on the same plot. The architecture department is located about 800
meters away in a distinct block. The boys hostel and the faculty and staff housing is located 8 Kms away in
Maharani Bagh. The new campus is intended as an integrated campus to allow the institution to perform to its
full potential.

2. Program

Recognizing the magnitude of incorporation of technology into the educational institute that will take
place in the future generation and provide space for it.
Addressing issues of flexibility and adaptability.
Evolving an architectural vocabulary for department like interactivity and wellness.
Addressing questions of identity and place making.
During my Dissertation, I studied about circulation spaces about campus design. I also know the
importance and need and growth of those projects.
The School of Planning and Architecture includes,
Academic functions
Auditorium
Library
Canteen
Student Centre
Dormitories
Sport Centre.
 3. Site

The site is located next to the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Vasant Kunj, Delhi and is almost 22 acres in
area. The site was earlier used for mining and it is contoured. There is a 9m deep trench in the centre of the
site which is almost 200m wide.

4. Technology

Solar Energy, Natural Cooling are the two important factors to consider hence Delhi has extreme hot
and cold climate.
To design a Institute which will provide good built environment with a blend of cluster and courtyard
planning and merging the built form with open space and landscape for a soothing environment.
To incorporate the Cost Effective Construction Techniques by using appropriate building materials and
techniques and by using recycled materials to achieve economy in initial construction and maintenance
costs.
5. Context

Studying the scope of interactivity in Architecture through Contemporary, materials and techniques and
translating the sensory experiences- warmth, excitement, repose into recognizable building aspects
that promote real user response.
Studying site and climate responsive design methods to find context specific solution.
Focus on aspects of site planning.
Evolving an architectural vocabulary with form materials, shape and scale of projects.
Undertake a spatial analysis and detail out the building design.
Integrating technology with building program
