On April 5th I visited the Art Gallery at CSUDH, which was titled Object

Lessons. The Art Gallery was very interesting, and included many abstract pieces of art,

which I particularly enjoyed. Many of the pieces of Art where either by Maddy LeMel, or

by Kelly Reemsten.

Russel Wright Set with Table, by Kelly Reemsten was an oil on canvas

painting. This painting was realistic in its essence because it was a very substantial, in

comparison to the other paintings. The painting also included complementary colors

(warm colors), which made the painting realistic in a sense. It also included implied lines,

actual texture, and outlines. Chiaroscuro was also a big part of the painting, because it not

only does it make the painting look three-dimensional, but it also makes it go from light

to dark. The painting is also asymmetrical, and pre-presentational. The shadows that are

underneath the seats make the painting seem realistic as well.

Multitudes by, Maddy LeMel. This is a mixed media work of art which consists

of Glass, plastic bottles, wire, fiberglass, and paper. This work of art is an assemblage,

meaning that it was put together using many forms of media. Hence, that is why it is a

mixed media work of art. This work of art is abstract and realistic because you can see all

the materials that the artist used to make this work of art. The work of art appears to be

falling (bottles are falling towards the ground); it gives it a very abstract look to it.

Furthermore the work of art is constructed, and three-dimensional.

Saarinen Side Chair by, Kelly Reemtsen. This is an etching, which is in black

and white. It is an etching of a lamp, which has a shadow in the background. This work of

art is expressionistic because it is very meager, and it is also symmetrical.

Stuffed by, Maddy LeMel. This is a mixed media work of art, it is also an

assemblage, and it is constructed. This work of art consists of a metal cage, metal

shavings, and wire. This work of art is abstract because the silver shavings are going all

the way towards the ceiling and are shaped in a Helix form (they are all coiled). The

overall purpose of the work of art perplexes me, but I guess every artist expresses

him/herself in a different form. The cage in itself is expressionistic; it is as if the metal

shavings are trying to elude the cage. Maybe the work of art is a metaphor for being set

free, or just being released from some type of imprisonment.

Dansk Teak Ice Buckets by, Kelly Reemtsen. This is an oil on panel painting; it

has actual texture, and has a little bit of outline at the top of the buckets. The painting also

includes chiaroscuro, which helps it give a three-dimensional shape. The painting makes

use of secondary colors. The buckets also have a shadow, which to me makes it seem

realistic, because real objects project shadows when left in the presence of light. Lastly,

the painting is asymmetrical.

Of the Clouds by, Maddy LeMel. This work of art is Expressionistic because

clouds are not Box shaped. Of the Clouds are composed of plex, paper, string, ribbon,

snake skin, and a steel stand. This work of art is an assemblage, and is constructed. The

work of art also includes geometric shapes, and is translucent because you can see
through them. The Boxes were stacked all over the place, in other words they didnt have

a specific order in which they were placed. This work of art also had actual texture, and

inside the little clouds you could see little shapes (round shapes).

Shadow Gram by, Maddy LeMel. This work of art is expressionistic and

consists of X-rays, wire, beads, and metal. This work of art is abstract and is also an

assemblage, which also means that it was constructed. The work of art looks like a bad

hair day, just that it is made out of metal. The color of the work of art is a Gray/Blue

color.
