Figuratively speaking How to create with figurative
language
ELAGSE7L5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative

Students will understand figurative language.
When using powtoon, students will create poems,
songs, or short prose using the following examples of
figurative language:onomatopoeia, simile, and
personification.

For my gifted students, students will use powtoons and
demonstrate understanding using three examples of each
term (onomatopoeia, simile, personification).
For grade level, theyd use google slides to demonstrate
understanding using two examples of each term
(onomatopoeia, simile, personification).
For those below level, theyd use powerpoint to
demonstrate understanding using one example of each
term (onomatopoeia, simile, personification).
Students will create video and audio using a creative
platform such as powtoons (and for my struggling
students, they can use powerpoint)

Access to google docs, a laptop, or computer. A free
account on Powtoons. (access to powerpoint)
Technology provides for a platform for students who may
not be good artists to be creative visually and
substitutes paper for electronic format, while creating an
opportunity for those who struggle with spelling to use
spell check.
Mentor text for Onomatopoeia - Katy perry Firework
Mentor text for personification and simile - Things Ive
had to get over poem.
A storyboard template.
Students need to know the difference between figurative
language and literal language (but well do a short
review).
We will use a T chart to discuss different forms of
figurative language using the literal version and figurative
version.
Students will use a mentor text to help recognize the
different figurative language examples. They will use a
colored highlighter to highlight onomatopoeia, a colored
pencil to circle examples of simile, and a pencil or pen to
draw a box around examples of personification.
Students will use the free version of powtoons to
complete the assignment: Using the creative platform
Powtoons, create a short story or poem that shows three
examples of each figurative language device:
onomatopoeia, simile, and personification.
Students could create a short story in graphic form and
add two examples of each figurative language device.
or create a teaching video using Powtoons
I will provide a rubric to students to show them what Ill
check for.
I will provide a visual example using powtoons and an
example using powerpoint.
