History 301

Sacred Heart mission

In 1920 the construction of Sacred heart mission began. The local Hispanic

residents came up with the idea of a new church, with the help of Pastor St. Boniface and

Fr. Patrick Browne. The first sacred mission was built by the residents and with the help

of the pastor. The church was completed on September, 1926.

Since day this tiny location has been the center of attention towards our

community. Helping, educating, and teaching about God. A new and bigger church was

built in 1963. On July 17, 1968 the first mass was held with a new and larger location.

Now there was room for 208 people. The 1926 bell was even removed and replaced with

a new one. Local people helped out with Sunday donations that contributed in building

classrooms and a parking lot that stands across the church. Many important celebrations

have been in honor of Sacred heart mission, for example in 1971 Archbishop Timothy

Manning dedicated the new Sacred Heart mission. A mariachi was waiting in the streets

Gilbert and Pacific streets, which they followed back to the church for mass.

Sacred heart mission continues to grow, in the 1990s its overflowing with

families. Weekday masses are also provided. Our community has always helped in

organizing events. Many fundraisers are organized to help out in the church. On Tuesday

nights there is a always a youth group. It is dedicated to talk about the word of God, we

are allowed to open our heart and pray. Sacred Heart mission keeps growing for the

better. Being an inspiration to our community, and always giving us faith.

The impact the Sacred heart mission has to our community is huge. Mainly

because we have a place to always pray at. It is a very relaxing and peaceful place to be

at. The people I have met through church impact my daily life. It helps me to be a better

person and serve God. Because I mostly work weekends its very difficult to attend mass,

but in Sacred heart mass is provided on the weekdays. When I have a bad day I always

have the chance to attend church, which helps me be calm about the situation. Hearing

the priest helps me understand a lot, and everyone in our community has the chance. The

church is like three minutes away from my house walking. Its so close to me, which

makes it better for our community.

The services they offer are great, because every Tuesday night after mass we stay

to talk about the bible. It gives the community a life lesson that helps us make it through

life. Teaching us what God really wants from us, and how to be a kind person. Its

amazing how close my community gets on Tuesdays it gives us a special connection with

God. Also now that my sister is 11 she has to do her first communion. Every Saturday

she has classes, and it gets me so happy when she tells me what she learned. We all turn

to our church because it has so much to offer.

When my uncle had cancer for the second time, I lost faith I couldnt believe he

was going through so much pain. It was amazing that just by one talk with our priest he

made me feel so much better. He came over to our house and talked to my uncle, he gave

out family hope. By going to church we gained so much faith. During the holidays they

organize so much events, and they put so much effort to make everything look and be

perfect. I know that if ever need advice I can always turn to my church. Our whole
community is blessed to have such an amazing church we all get together to celebrate

God.
