PREFACE
2011 marked the most exciting year in
FontFont history. The innovations
that we launched this year received a warm
welcome in the design and development com-
munities and beyond.

The Wonderful World of Web FontFonts

Almost two years after FontFont became the first
type manufacturer to release webfonts in the .woff
format, the Web FontFont Library has grown into
a Library of 3,500 typefaces. Compatible with more
than 96 % of all browsers, including Mobile Safari,
webfonts are here to stay. Hundreds of websites
currently use the popular ffDIN, ffDax, ffMeta,
ffTisa, as well as many other FontFonts, to set
themselves apart with beautiful design.
FontFont set standards not only technically, but
also in terms of user-friendliness. Our customers
appreciate multiple hosting options. They can host
their Web FontFonts on their own servers, or for
those who prefer subscription services, our coopera-
tion with Typekit offers a safe and easy-to-use alter-
native. Web developers enjoy designing offline
mockups and webpage layouts with Comp fonts,
packaged with webfonts at no additional charge.
This year, we also improved the magical FontFonter
service. With the help of FontFonter.com users can
test-drive a large selection of Web FontFonts on any
html site. To date, 42 sans serif and 22 serif families
are available to preview in various combinations.
Subsetter.com, our online FontFont optimizer, which
debuted in July, also gained a lot of popularity. Using
Subsetter, FontFonts can be individually rebuilt, both
in terms of file size as well as aesthetics. For instance, awarded, not only with the approval of our custo-
when you want to use oldstyle figures instead of
tabular figures or do not need any language support,
you can remove unnecessary characters and reduce
the size of the webfont by up to 90 %. When several
weights are being used, small font files can dramati-
cally lessen the burden of high traffic and speed up
the load of the website.
Moving into Mobile
Recently, the mobile apps market became more
typographically diverse. FontFont is the first foundry
to answer the needs of this market with a customer
friendly offer: Mobile FontFonts. They let you break
from the mold of rather dull system fonts, with a
simple and economical all-inclusive license.
Amazing Accolades
2011 was also an exciting year for many of our type
designers. FontFont designers received 11 renowned
awards in 2011, including those from Type Directors
Club, istd International Typographic Awards, ATypIs
Type Design Competition Letter.2 and Communica-
tion Arts.

Smeijers wanted ffQuadraat to be as
economical as Times, but with less sparkle; as
balanced as Plantin, but less static. The resulting
typeface is a wonderfully effective text typeface, with
unassuming yet highly original character shapes.
ffQuadraat quickly became one of the flagship type
families for the fledgling independent foundry.
Over the years the family expanded
into a comprehensive type system. And now, almost
two decades after the initial release, Smeijers has
completely overhauled the Serif, Sans and Sans
Condensed versions of ffQuadraat. After examining
the original designs, many character shapes were
carefully redesigned and fine-tuned. Furthermore
three delicate light weights were added to the Sans
and Sans Condensed versions, and new Demi
weights for all the variants bridge the gap between
Regular and Bold. Every single weight in Serif, Sans,
and Sans Condensed now has Small Caps, as well as
Pro character sets with Latin & Cyrillic Extended,

If you were a FontFont which one would you be and why?
I would be ff Schmalhans Bold. Schmalhans is a very con-
46 inside type department densed font with a large x-height and was first drawn in the
headline & copy: ff Sero
questions: ff Nexus Serif 70s. Like me, I was born in the 70s. I have wide legs, I am
not really fat but I am broad in the beam so I look like con-
densed bold. Schmalhans is very clear and I am also very
straight in the things I like to do.

What is your favorite music?
My favorite band is, for over 20 years now, Current 93.
What was the biggest challenge for you in 2011?
I had to draw my first uppercase German double s. It will be
interesting to see if this glyph will be used and which form
will be the favorite. My big private event this year was my
first individual time trial. I trained a lot with my triathlon
bike to achieve a good result and I was very happy with my
time at the end.

If you were a FontFont which one would you be and why?
I actually had to ask my wife about this, its always hard to
compare yourself to something like a typeface
I would be ff Spinoza. At first sight, it looks quite sober and
not very fancy, but once you get to know it better, you will
discover interesting details and how it can take you a long
way. Im also more book than display type.

What is your favorite music?
My all-time favorite band has to be The Magnetic Fields, for
their stylistic experiments and unparalleled lyrical wit. Earlier
this year I kept listening to the various Johnny Cash concerts
recorded in prisons. It was fascinating how different the
atmosphere and performances were between them.
What was the biggest challenge for you in 2011?
To move into a new flat. I had completely forgotten how
time-consuming and work-intensive that was.

The Wuppertal musician, instrument builder, graphic designer
and type designer Hans Reichel suddenly and unex-
pectedly passed away in his studio on November 22,
2011. Designers and typographers know him as the
Also ff Dax was subsequently revisited. Seeing Akira
creator of the popular Barmeno and the world-renow-
ned ffDax family. Other type designs by Reichel are
ffDaxline, ffSari, ffSchmalhans, and ffRoutes.
Hans Reichel appeared on the type scene with his first
design Barmeno, an idiosyncratic sans serif released
in 1983 by Berthold. He would revisit this concept of a
rounded spurless design in 1999 with ffSari. Expan-
ding on his original ideas he devised a more versatile
and complete interpretation, with a wider range of
weights and a comprehensive character set.
The ff Dax family was gradually augmented with
compact, condensed and wide versions, and italics
for all variants.
Kobayashis lecture about Adrian Frutigers Avenir
Next at TYPO Berlin 2004 inspired Hans Reichel to
start working on ffDaxline. The improved proportions
and increased stress make it better suited for text
use. Personally Reichel thought ff Daxline to be the
better typeface it is clearer, airier and more
versatile. Reichel toyed with the idea of creating a
condensed version, but wasnt sure if hed still be
able to swing it at his retirement age. Sadly, now
we will never know.

Although Barmeno and ffSari enjoyed seizable success,
Hans Reichels real breakthrough as a type designer
came with the typographic powerhouse ffDax.
Slightly more angular and systematic than its prede-
cessor, this immensely popular type family has
become arguably one of the most used advertising
faces worldwide since its release fifteen years ago.
Through the music he created, through the instruments he
built, and through the typefaces he designed Hans
Reichel shone as a fiercely original voice. With the
disappearance of this multitalented maverick artist
the type and music world is left a little poorer.
