This collection of spreadsheet utilities can be applied to create inputs for the DRAINS Program (www.watercom.com.au).
DRAINS can accept a number of inputs from spreadsheets, such as rainfall intensity patterns, detention basin elevation-st
relationships, weir characteristics and hydrographs.
Some of the procedures set out here may be eventually in corporated into DRAINS, but most are more easily implemented
using the capabilities of Excel.

These worksheets are supplied to users of the DRAINS program by Anstad Pty Ltd on the basis that they will check the va

DRAINS requires that a volume and a ponding depth be supplied for each sag pit.
This sheet provides two methods for calculating ponded volumes.
This covers two cases which should account for most ponding situations.

Worksheet Calculating Elevation-Surface Area Relationships for Detention Basins of Certain Sh
This sheet demonstrates procedures for calculating surface areas for detention basins of various shapes, for use in the de
calculations in DRAINS. For general areas, such as natural or smoothed landforms, it will be necessary to determine areas
planimeters, polygons in CAD drawings or routines in digital terrain models such as 12d or Civil 3D.
Since DRAINS employs prismoidal calculations to determine detention basin volumes (as described in the
it is necessary to provide surface areas for eight or more horizontal slices keep errors in volumes within 1% for certain sh
These include wedges and bowl-shaped storages with sides that slope more steeply as the elevation increases.
The calculations below indicate how you can set up more complex calculations presenting elevation-storage relationships
from where they can be copied and pasted into the Detention Basin property sheet in DRAINS.
This shape is quite complicated. Rather than calculating areas from truncated parabolic shapes,
this procedure calculates the water surface widths at the centre of the cylinder and at the ends,
averages these and multiplies by the cylinder length. Potential errors can be reduced by taking
shorter divisions between layers at the lowest and highest depths.

The orifice equation above applies when the orifice is fully submerged on the
upstream side, say when H is 1.2 times the orifice radius D/2, and where
there are no tailwater effects. This will not be correct when water level
(H - the centre level of the orifice) is below this. In this worksheet, this error
is glossed over, assuming that errors in this range will not be significant.
If the downstream side of the orifice becomes submerged, the orifice equation
still applies, but with H being (upstream water level - tailwater level) rather than
(upstream water level - orifice centre level as for a free outfall. This situation
is not allowed for here, but this worksheet can be adapted to apply it.
city correction,
DRAINS can model pumps using an elevation-discharge relationship in a high level outlet from a detention basin.
In an overflow route out of a basin, a H v Q relationship can be defined.
2. Set out the basin levels for which discharges are to be calculated.
For each elevation, determine the discharge in the third column by trial and error.
The correct discharges should make the head differences in the last column close to zero.
3. Copy the orange columns and paste to the DRAINS pumping outlet (an overflow route coming out of the basin).
