includes what they are
doing with the technology).
Before preceding with the simulated experiment all students on the online
class must answer the following questions first:
1. What is germination?
2. What factors do you think will affect seed germination?

Students must form a hypothesis for the following activities:

Activity A: Do seeds need water to germinate?
Activity B: Do seeds need light to germinate?
Activity C: How does the amount of heat affect seed germination?

Students will use Germination Gizmo for each of the activities they will set up
their trays however they like. Students will:
Drag a packet of seeds to each tray.
Click on the coils to set heat level.
Click on the light bulbs to turn them on or off.
Drag the daily water slider up or down to adjust the amount of water
the seeds will get.
The goal is to get 20 out of 20 seeds to sprout after the simulation ends (five
days) for each of the activities. Students must make connections and use the

knowledge they have gained from this lesson plan to control the variables on
the simulated experiment on seed germination. Students must perform the
test, write down the results, clear the trays, click the reset button and proceed
to the next activity. Students must submit their results and answer the
following conclusions:
In general, do seeds need water to germinate? Explain.
In general, do seeds need light to germinate? Explain.
Is too much heat bad for seed germination? Is too little heat bad?
Explain.
Students will make a poster they can either create it online or take a picture
and submit it into the discussion board. The experiment posters should include
their hypothesis, picture, drawing, or chart of their results, and their
conclusions. Afterwards, students must reply to two of their classmates with
constructive and positive comments about the posters.
