The Journal of Memory and Language is a peer-reviewed journal that is considered one
of the top tier journals in the field of Linguistics (Scimago Journal & Country Rank, 2017)
(Wikipedia, 2017). Elsevier first published it in 1985 after changing its name in that year from
the Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior into the Journal of Memory and Language
(Ulrichsweb, 2017).

The articles published in the Journal of Memory and language discuss topics that include
the formulation of scientific issues and theories in the areas of memory, language
comprehension and production, and cognitive processes (Elsevier, 2017). The journals focus is
on publishing scholarly research papers (Ulrichsweb, 2017, Elsevier, 2017). Although the journal
may publish significant theoretical papers, its emphasis is given to empirical research articles
that rely on profound experiments (Elsevier, 2017). The journals audience vary from
psychologists and linguists to others interested in reading, speech, language and memory
(Elsevier, 2017).

The published articles are mainly written by scholars in the specific fields (ScienceDirect,
2017). The structure of each article should include an introduction that provides a sound
background of the work accompanied by a clear statement of the research objectives (Elsevier,
2017). The structure should also include a section for the materials and methods that provide
sufficient details as well as providing stimulus lists, statistical tests and inferential statistics
(Elsevier, 2017). Other structure requirements include clear and concise results; a discussion that
examines the relevance and significance of the results; and an appendix section comprising
formulas, equations, tables, figures, etc. (Elsevier, 2017).
The Journal of Memory and Language does publish special issues (Elsevier, 2017).
However, these special issues do not seem to have a fixed publishing frequency. The last two
special issues were published in the year 2016, in addition to an absolute absence within the
eight preceding years, coupled with irregularity of special issue publishing prior to the year 2008
(Elsevier, 2017).

The significant high criteria of the journal shift the publishing requirements to very high
standards (Elsevier, 2017). The articles submitted must make significant contribution to the
scientific field, supported with a substantial empirical advancement in knowledge (Elsevier,
2017). The journal takes into consideration the importance of the issue discussed, as well as
expecting clear correlation between the experiments and the theoretical issues (Elsevier, 2017).
All papers must include sound analysis of the data provided along with figures and tables that
should simplify the data presented (Elsevier, 2017). A competing interests statement must be
submitted, even if the authors have no competing interests to declare (Elsevier, 2017).

The journal impact factor has reached its peak of 5.21 in the year 2015, following a
gradual increase from the preceding year (4.23) (InCites, 2017). These two years were
responsible for the high five-year impact factor of 4.74 (InCites, 2017).

The journals five-year impact factor marks an excellent score of 4.74 (InCites, 2017). It
has reached its peak of 5.21 in the year 2015, following a gradual increase from the preceding
year (4.23) (InCites, 2017). Although the impact factor reached its peak in 2015, the total
number of citations in 2016 was greater, marking as high as 8541 (InCites, 2017). Moreover, the
Article Influence Score in 2016 of 2.009 was higher than the previous two years that had higher
impact factor scores. Overall, the Journal of Memory and Language maintained a decent average
impact factor of 3.15 throughout the past 15 years, which allowed the journal to be one of the top
tier journals in field of Linguistics (InCites, 2017).
