Abstract

T h is p ap er reveals the m echan ism of popu lat ion m igrat ion along the coastal u rban region s in
Ch ina. T h is is the first large 2scale su rvey on float ing popu lat ion ever conducted in large and
m edium cit ies including B eijing, T ian jin, T angshan, L angfang, N an jing and Kun shan. T he
p ap er first review s the in tellectual foundat ion of dem ograph ic studies on m igrat ion. W ith the
su rvey data and fu rther analysis, it exam ines the characterist ics of popu lat ion m igrat ion in
Ch inese cit ies. Ch ina is now undergo ing a large scale of ru ral m igrat ion in to the u rban dom ain
w ith m echan ist ic increases in the num ber of float ing popu lat ion. T he m o t ive fo r m igrat ion is
p redom inately econom ic. Fam ily 2type m igrat ion is get t ing m o re popu lar than individual
m igrat ion. F rom an econom ic perspect ive, low value added, sem i2sk illed job s are taken up by
the first 2t im e m igran t s, and there is also the co rresponding sh ift to service and m anagerial type
of w o rk fo r the local residen t s. Chain 2type m igrat ion w ith upw ard m ovem en t on the job ladder is
ob served fo r the second 2t im e m igran t s. F rom a social view po in t, job s fo r m igran t s are m o st ly
un tenu red and w ithou t w elfare p rovision as com pared w ith tho se availab le fo r the u rban
dw ellers. M igrat ion s in cit ies coalesced together to fo rm cliques and syndicates. T h is has
resu lted in a m o re segregated u rban m o rpho logy.
