Revisiting the Four Pillars of Learning (An excerpt from Revisiting the Four Pillars of
Learning: Roles of the Pillars in Reorientation and Reorganization) Z. Nan- Zhao

THE FOUR PILLARS OF LEARNING

The four pillars of learning are fundamental principles for reshaping education:
Learning to know, to provide the cognitive tools required to better comprehend the world and
its complexities, and to provide an appropriate and adequate foundation for future learning. It
involves the acquisition and development of knowledge and skills that are needed to function in
the world.

Learning to do, to provide the skills that would enable individuals to effectively participate in
the global economy and society. It involves the acquisition of skills that would enable
individuals to effectively participate in the global economy and society.

Learning to be, to provide self analytical and social skills to enable individuals to develop to
their fullest potential psycho-socially, affectively as well as physically, for a all-round complete
person. It involves activities that promote holistic personal development (body, mind and spirit),
for an all-round complete person. These include cultivating ones self analytical and social skills,
creativity, personal discovery and an appreciation of the inherent value provided by these
pursuits.

Learning to live together: to expose individuals to the values implicit within human rights,
democratic principles, intercultural understanding and respect and peace at all levels of society
and human relationships to enable individuals and societies to live in peace and harmony. It
involves the development of social skills and values such as respect and concern for other, social
and inter-personal skills and appreciation of the diversity among people.

Insights:
To my FLT Dr. Maria Ines Asuncion, I would like to share with you my learning and my insights
regarding on The Four Pillars of Learning.
Dr. Jose P. Rizals famous message for the youth is that, the youth is fair hope of the nation.
When I was a child I never understand this message because for me, how can I become a fair
hope of the nation that I, myself belong to a broken family and I am not sure if I can finish my
studies because my mother is only a house helper, in short we are poor. But poverty is not the
hindrance of our ambition to finish school and be a fair hope of our nation. As a grade one
teacher, teaching grade one for 24 years, I ask myself, Did I contributed a lot to my pupils? Did
I help them prepared to become productive, working citizen after they leave the portals of the
school? Did I impart them the knowledge that they need? Am I a good mentor that helps them
develop their young minds?
A teacher or an educator is a person who helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or
values. Teaching 24 years as grade one teacher is not an easy task. The future of the young minds
is in my hand. I may say that I am not only a teacher but a mother, a nurse, a doctor, a nanny, a
helper, a sister, an actress. I am a role model in my class. In my two chat session class Ive
learned many things. In module 1, I learned about Equipping Teachers with Knowledge, Skills,
Attitudes and Values for the 21st Century. We are now in the modern invention. Our students
now are different from our students before. As a teacher, I require myself to cope up with the
challenges and demands of the 21st century KSAVs. It is my task to guide and help my students
to meet the challenges of the 21st century for them to be able to succeed in life when they are out
from the four walls of the classroom. In my 24 years teaching grade one; I can say that what I
learned from the seminar workshop is not enough to meet the challenges of the 21st century. I
cannot give what I have to my students if I myself not fully equipped with the 21st century
changes. For me, it is important to possess KSAVs to be able to connect to my 21st century
learners. As per observation, the kind of learners today is different from our learners before and
for us teacher this is also a great challenge. The four pillars of learning means a lifelong
learning. The framework takes into account that learning in the 21st century is a continuous
building of skills and knowledge throughout the life of an individual. It occurs through
experience encountered in the course of a lifetime. It doesnt mean that we teachers graduated
already our degrees and teach for how many years means we are already equipped. We need to
upgrade ourselves and posses KSAVs.

Teacher is not only a profession but a mission and vocation to fulfill. We can make difference.
