INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST & SOCIETY

BNP 30302

1. Why does the technologist must aware on environmental issue?

Environmental is their career scope. It is their responsibility to aware of their surrounding

that related to environmental issues, so they know the environmental problem that we are
facing right now. They must be knowledgeable about broad trends and solve any related
problems using specific technologies. For example, one of the examples of environmental
issues that need fixing is production of plastic goods. Currently our society creates a great
deal of waste and much of that waste is comprised of plastic. This waste ends up all over
the globe in both land and water. In Portal Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri,
Koperasi dan Kepenggunaan said that Only seven of the 289 landfill sites in the country
are eco-friendly sanitary landfill. Means that less than 2.5 percent of the landfill is well
managed with the rest operating or open-dumping. So, in this situation as a future
technologist they aware that our country are facing this problem, they must think how to
mitigate issues at hand and begin to fix the problem for our better future environment.

2. What is the important role of technologist in relation with the society?

As a future environmental technologist, one of the important role in society is to promote

the environmental awareness and participate in creating a brighter future for our children.
They are environmentalist that evokes the necessity and responsibility of humans to
respect, protect and preserve the natural world from afflictions. What they can do is by
spreading the awareness. By teaching our friend and family that the physical environment
is fragile and indispensable we can begin fixing the problems that threaten it. Numerous
resources are available to promote environmental awareness, group learning (in or
outside of class), international and inspirational seminars, environmental books and
brochure or maybe we can go and meet the villages talk with them and teach. For
example, educate them how to manage disposal waste properly since many disposal
waste not managed properly in most rural area because lack of environmental awareness
and knowledge about this related issues among villagers.

3. What is the current issue on environment involved with engineering? Explain the
issue and propose the way to solve it.

Environmental issues becoming more complex and challenging due to emerging of new
types of products, changes in manufacturing process, emerging new technologies for
products, level of housekeeping, degree of cleaner technology use, competency in
handling environmental issues, old environmental still not properly address and the
regulations are not updated.

There are many environmental issues we are facing right now. One of it is solid waste
management problem. Malaysia is faced with challenges with respect waste management
sector because of the increase of population and tourism, economic growth for
sustainable development and inadequate waste legislation enforcement, infrastructure and
public attitude among residents. Generally, the grater the economic prosperity and the
higher percentage of urbanization, the grater the amount of solid waste produced.

The typical way to solve this problem is by source reduction and reuse of solid waste
implementation. It is important that we reduce the amount of garbage dumped in
municipal landfills for a number of reasons which is landfills are increasingly short of
space and construction of new landfill sites are vehemently opposed due to their
undesirable nature. All this items in a landfill are effectively lost to society and a waste of
natural resources. Lastly, landfill produces vast amount of pollution, both methane to the
atmosphere and leachates to the soil. Reducing the volume, toxicity of waste generated,
including the switch to reusable products and packaging is often opposed by consumer
society.

Usually, waste management authorities efforts are more concentrated on collection,

transportation and open dumping. The need to develop ways and means in turning our
waste into resources is crucial and worth consideration. Recycling, reuse and recovery of
energy is essential as an integrated approach towards waste management
4. The impacts of globalization on the technology profession consequently creates a
challenge to understand what it means to be a technologist in the 21st century.
Discuss how best to prepare the technologists of the future.

As a future technologist, we have to prepare ourself with skills needed in order to drive
and benefit from these changes. When we have the skills that has been searching by
industries, means that we are better prepared together with the knowledge base of
technology education.

The opening of the world trade and globalization of economy and business has led to the
spread of multinational companies. Industry in developing countries are faced with many
challenges and must transform themselves into multinational industry by acquiring
different competencies that allow us to face up the challenges of globalization.

Throughout the history of civilization, technology has played a critical role in economic
development. Technologists are key not only in solving local problems but also in
knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. Thus, technology education plays a very
important role in developing the technology professionals that will not only solve local,
regional challenges but also succeed in the highly technical and globalize economy of
today and tomorrow. Competitiveness will increasingly depend on the capacity to tap into
global pools of knowledge and leverage the best human resources available in the world.
The explosion of knowledge, coupled with the global movement of ideas, makes it
impossible to fully anticipate the nature of future innovations. It remains that countries
that will derive the most from globalization will be those in which the systems of
education, business, and government can cooperate to educate, train, and put to work
their human capital.
