Landscape lighting, however, must be more

than the effect it achieves. Fixtures must be
designed to blend inconspicuously with the
natural beauty of the surroundings 1n daylight
as well. The source o{ lighl should be effect-

APPLICATI(]N s;ECTION

In makinq the lighting layout tirst estabish the objectives you wish to obtain ls the iglrting to be
viewed lrorn the inside only or from the insidc and outside? ls it to light an area where dining might take
place? Having determined the objective, begin the ighting layout. As an example, if you wish the main
arca of the landscape lighted for viewing frorn inside the house, visually survey thc landscape from this
point, noting the main teatures whether it be statuary, a tree, a path or flower beds. From thc three basic
catagories ot landscape lighting fixtures lll Up Lighting, [2] Down Lighting or l3l Spread Lighting
seect the proper light or ights to iliuminate each of the features identified lndicate thcse on your plan.
Gencral y, the up ighting should be placed out from the trunk of a tree and positioned
away from low entwining branches running out trom the base. This will permit light to filter up through
the tree creating the desired shadows ard si houettes From one up to four or five up lights maybe
needed depending on thc size of the tree. Throughout the Kim catalog you will find a variety of uplights
for various types of mounting. In garden areas having a shal ow depth, greater depth and visual separation
of features from the background planting mav be achieved with a silhouettc iighting by placing the up
lights in back of the tree trunk or beh nd plants that are relatively open. Generally flood type amps are
preterable tor use in up lighting fixtures, however, for tall narrow trees such as palms, spot lamps are
more effective.

- Down lighting fixtLrres have many uses and provide excellent illumination for drive
ways, paths, tlower beds, outdoor dining areas or wheTever a sott llght is required. Suspended from tree
limbs, down lights are not only lhe most desirous type of lightlng for these applicatiofs, but the nost
economical The units should be hung high in trees when shadows are desired or mounted ow for such
