Rhetorical Knowledge

The means of speaking well and using language conventions for persuasion. Used to create
many different types of texts, according to the audience, context, and purpose. Goals include
the ability to shift voice, tone, formality, etc. to suit different situations/contexts.

Ive used rhetoric in my writing before when writing a research

paper in order to make myself credible and prove my point,
rather than make it unappealing and dreary.

Critical Reading

By the end of YFW, we should be able to use reading to ask questions, to learn new things, and
to indulge curiosity. Be able to look over works of our own, others, whether that is scholarly or a
journal or informal. Use a range of texts and know the difference between evidence and
assertion, and other features for different audiences/situations.

In past writings, Ive used critical reading to determine whether or

not a source was credible. When deciding if a source is credible,
you have to determine if it is biased, or using fact-driven points.

Composing Processes

Should be able to show flexible processes for drafting, reviewing, collaborating, and the rest of
the writing process. Realize and use the tools in the writing process and interact with others,
brainstorm, and listen to evaluations. Using this will deepen engagement with source material,
ideas, strengthening claims and solidifying arguments.

Ive tried to use the writing process in every single paper or essay
Ive ever because it helps to eliminate errors and produce the
most polished and professional piece that you are capable of
while most efficiently communicating your ideas.
Knowledge of Conventions

Should be able to negotiate and determine why there are variations in conventions (i.e.
structure, tone, design, formatting) between genres. Use documentation conventions that help
apply citations. Know of basic linguistic structures including grammar, punctuation, spelling.

Ive used conventions before in different writings to communicate

different styles and moods. In a journal entry, I might use
conventions that are more laid-back and informal, while in an
essay I would use all of the proper conventions needed for a
formal argument.

Critical Reflection

Students must be able to look back at their work in many situations, as well as be able to
critique themselves and look at what they have created and write that out. Should be able to
demonstrate awareness of rhetoric, writing process, and knowledge of conventions.

In the past, Ive often been assigned reflections after essays

in order to assess my writing, realize my strengths and
weaknesses, and keep in mind what I can do better next time.
