Community Change
Often, people in the community look up to others especially the political leadership to initiate
and implement changes they wish to see in the community. This is not the case however, as
mahatma Gandhi said, it is the individuals efforts put together in different ways that have the
potential of changing society. Throughout the eight weeks, it is apparent that what Mahatma said
is true in the sense that leadership at whatever level is not capable of making the changes we all
want to see. Individuals in their own small or big way can change their societies. Improving the
livelihoods as well as the standards of living depends on the efforts individuals make. Through
small businesses and other profit and non-profit ventures are individuals able to change society
they live in. This papers paper details the new ideas about community change, changes that I
would desire to see implemented and how these changes can be achieved.
For so long communities have looked up to the elite political class to bring changes to the
communities but without realizing that we the community are the change we need. While the
political leaders can help facilitate change, the change must come from within, centered around
the people and for the good of the people. Change is a collective effort that is heavily dependent
on the communitys willingness. The role leadership in bringing change cannot be downplayed.
Leaders are influential and often have a large following. They are therefore critical in the change
process because their influence has the ability to shift opinions and attitudes. There is a no lesser
person regardless of ones community standing and all people are equally important in the
change process. Over reliance on leaders and leaders who dont have the peoples interests at
heart have been the biggest impediments to changing communities and the world as a whole.
Desired Change
Discrimination continues to exist in all spheres of life. People are discriminated upon based on
either gender, race, religion, tribe, social status among others. In todays world racial and
religion based discrimination are the most talked about but less emphasis is paid on
discrimination based on social standing. Successful people are highly regarded in almost all
communities. Their opinions are highly considered and often these people become the voice of
the community. Success has also been measured depending on ones material wealth and those
without it are not considered successful. Poor people lack a voice in the community and rarely is
Changing this calls a change in community perspectives. What is needed is for someone
to stand up and raise their voice against this discrimination. This is a change that I desire to see
and in my own capacity I can spearhead the change by being the voice of change. In an era of
heavy internet and social media usage, change can be driven through social campaigns against
discrimination of people based on social standing. We are all equal and we should be treated as
such.
Conclusion
Mahatma Gandhi's words are true, that we can be change we want. The success of
community driven changes such as the women empowerment campaigns have proven it to be
true. Through individual efforts, women have come together and have successfully broken many
