Lesson Plan

Activity Name: Egyptian wall paintings

Approximate Length of Experience: 30 minutes

Age and Number of Children: 20 seven and eight year olds

Goal: To understand the importance of preserving history for future generations.

Domain: Cognitive

Content: Facts include: Why is it important to preserve the wall paintings found within the

tombs of Egypt?

Vocabulary words include: preserved, wall paintings, tomb, after life, history

Objectives: Participation in this activity will increase the childs ability to

1. Understand why it is important to preserve history so that we can learn about and from

it.

2. Interpret a wall painting from an ancient civilization.

3. Be able to create their own wall painting depicting a specific event in their own life.
Materials: 20 (24 inch) pieces of brown colored or tan colored construction paper. 20 pencils. 4

sets of colored markers (one set for each group of tables [5 students at a table]). 8 erasers (2 at

each table).

Procedure: Begin the lesson by putting up the PowerPoint that shows various wall paintings

from Egyptian tombs.

Teacher: These are some examples of Egyptian wall paintings? They tell us a story from history

of the lives of the Egyptians.

(Point to one of the slides and ask) What is it that this wall painting is telling us? (Evaluative)

Good comments my friends.

Can anyone explain to me why it may be important to preserve to maintain the original state

of these extraordinary wall paintings? (Convergent)

(Assuming the students were not on the right path to the answer)

What if you painted your parents this amazing painting that told a special story of a time you

spent together and then over time it started to fade away, how would that effect you?

(Evaluative)

(Students are understanding the importance of preservation better)

Today we are going to make our own special wall paintings. We will think of a special event in

our life and then put it on paper to tell a story!

Simplification: I would offer up more of my own input if the students were not understanding

my questions.

Extension: As a class we would come up with a special school event (such as a school function

or activity) and make a class wall painting.

Teacher: I want you all as a class to discuss a special event or activity here in school that you all

like. We are going to create a wall painting together and cover one wall of the room. What is it

that you as an individual want to tell in this story? What is it as a class that you want to tell in

this story? (Convergent)

Evaluation Method: Observation and the final collection of personal wall paintings.

What Next: In the next lesson we will discuss hieroglyphics, their importance, and make our

own.

Evaluation of appropriateness of the category (type) of questions used:

Did you use the best categories of questions or could you have improved by using different

categories? Defend your position.

I feel I did pretty well at the questions I asked. This lesson plan is directed to 2nd graders and I

feel they are more capable to think more deeply. This is why I chose convergent and evaluative

questions mostly. I also feel there is always room for improvement. I think I should have had

some memory questions in there so that I can reinforce the students knowledge of what was

learned about the wall paintings.
