Professional Development Plan

Goal 1: Improve my ability to collaborate with my students general educators to better support
my students access to the general curriculum.
CEC Standard: Beginning special education professionals through collaboration with
general educators and other colleagues create safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning
environments to engage individuals with exceptionalities in meaningful learning activities and
social interactions. (CEC 2.1)

Supporting Activities:

Year 1: Read Collaboration Between General and Special Education Teachers.

discuss ways we can collaborate better to meet the academic needs of the
students.

Year 2: The gen. ed. teachers will meet with me once a month and send me their
lesson plans every week.
Year 3: Take an inclusion course

Criteria for Success: Through informal and formal assessments we will be able to see if the
students are benefitting from the ex. ed. teacher and gen. ed. teacher collaboration.

Goal 2: Improve in my ability to intervene safely and appropriately with individuals with
exceptionalities in crisis.

CEC Standard: Beginning special education professional know how to intervene safely
and appropriately with individual with exceptionalities in crisis. (CEC 2.3)

Year 1: Read Relationship Between Crisis and Special Education.

Year 2: Ask administration to have a yearly PD about this.


Year 3: Keep up with the latest information regarding how to deal with Ex. Ed.
students in a crisis and take a course in it.
Criteria for Success: Students with an emotional disability will be able to trust me and allow me
to help them in their crisis.
Goal 3: Improve in my ability to teach and accommodate every students individual needs.

generalization of learning. (CEC 5.6)

Year 2: Continue to build in my skill set by attending courses/workshops that will


help me improve in my teaching methodology.
Year 3: I will ask the head of the Department of Ex. Ed. to observe me to see if I
have improved in the areas that I spoke about.
Criteria for Success: If anyone including parents, teachers and people from the Ex. Ed.
Department tell me Im doing a great job, then that will suffice.
Goal 4: Improve in my ability to teach cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills.
CEC Standard: Beginning special education professionals teach cross-disciplinary
knowledge and skills such as critical thinking and problem solving to individuals with
exceptionalities. (CEC 5.7)

Year 2: Attend workshops/courses that focuses on how to teach cross-


disciplinary knowledge and skills to students with special needs.
Year 3: Have peers evaluate me.
Criteria for Success: Seeing students make gains in this area will suffice.

Goal 5: Improve in my ability to implement what Im taught at these learning communities.


CEC Standard: Beginning special education professionals understand the significance of
lifelong learning and participate in professional activities and learning communities (CEC 6.4)

Year 2: I will continue to seek to improve at what I do by making sure Im in good


terms with all the teachers. I want there to be an open line of communication.
Year 3: Teachers will consider me a part of their team. They will seek out my
advice and guidance.
Criteria for Success: Knowing that I have done everything I could on my part to make it work.
