Philosophy of Education

An educational philosophy should reflect what you believe about teaching and

learning. It should address vital questions about your ideas on the purpose of education

and more in particular the role of the teacher in the classroom. John Dewey stated that

Educators are responsible, therefore, for providing students with experiences that are

immediately valuable and which better enable the students to contribute to society. I

believe that all students can learn and deserve a quality education regardless of their

background. My educational philosophy will serve as a guide to what I deem as the

purpose of educating students.

The opportunity to teach any student is both a privilege and an important job. As a

teacher you are provided with the chance to expand students frame of thought while

teaching them life lessons. Teachers are partly responsible for shaping students by

challenging them academically. Not all students are afforded the same opportunities in

life. These are the reasons why teachers should be aware of their students emotional

needs as well as their cognitive development. I plan on teaching in an urban

environment, in the context of education urban is synonymous with inner cities where the

students are usually at an extreme disadvantage when compared to their suburban

counterparts. These students in particular have been labeled as being unable to learn.

Through my educational philosophy, I plan on challenging that notion by identifying the

key factors necessary in creating an environment where all students can successfully

navigate through the educational process.

Classroom Environment

In order to put my educational philosophy into practice it is imperative that I

provide a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. As a teacher you must be

knowledgeable about the subject that you are teaching but you must also possess the

ability to communicate with your students effectively. I believe that open communication

is important in maintaining a classroom where students are eager to learn and ask

questions. There are methods that I will use to keep students engaged and keep them

motivated to continue to learn throughout their education. One method in particular that I

find will be beneficial in ensuring that all of my students are being taught effectively is

individualized instruction. Through the use of individualized instruction, I will be able to

assist all students regardless of who have different learning processes.
