05: Faith: What are some instances on campus where free speech was targeted
clearly?
0.18 H: about a month ago there was a protest by the spray painted walls at night about
the walls with mexico and palestine. They were allowed to be there as long as they
wanted to so theyre free speech was being used and expressed.
0.40 H: for the past couple years people involved with the Vagina Monologues would
help put on a program called Our Voices where people would go to a workshop and
write their experiences like surviving rape or how society has made them uncomfortable
with their own bodies and they would later present that
1.07 H: ..and it was a free space where anyone could come everyone could say how
they felt so thats a thing
1.20: Faith: is there anywhere on campus where you think that there [would be] a limited
free speech that you would go and you just cant say things
1.33 H: definitely any workplaces
2.04 H: sometimes i feel like around certain professors you can't say certain things
2.09 H: I had one professor who was just like Male and females biological genders are a
social construct and I had another professor be like there are just like two genders so
you know the differences and know what you can and cant say
2.40 H: Free speech is definitely a thing on campus because you see all the chalk
drawings. Although one chalk drawing made me very angry because it said true
feminists are pro-life which I think is rude because no one gets to say what is and what
is not a feminist unless you are truly going against what feminism stands for
3.38 H: it honestly depends on who youre with and where youre at for where free
speech cant be used
3.55 H: cause yeah, gotta play nice with your professors.
4.00 the only place I feel like my free speech was limited was in a club i was in, the
MMA club.
4.14 H: because a lot of guys were involved in that and a lot of the guys are pretty sexist
including my coach. He doesnt think he is but he is.
4.23 H: there was actually one time where they were talking about septum piercings and
this one guy who was extremely sexist and hated me specifically for that reason was
like all girls are getting there septums pierced and it's funny because guys dont even
find that attractive and i was like thats funny because not all girls do it to be found
attractive to guys and
4.57 H: and my coach just drums up and says no we're not doing this feminist shit this
year and im just like i can leave
5.19 H: there is just so many people of a set group thinking and you cant always just
fight against that even though I obviously try
5.30 H:most places on campus as long as there are mostly free thinking people its
usually okay to say what you feel but people may try to get you to feel a different way
but if you dont then thats okay [thats] fine.
5.47 Faith: do you think that specifically in protests that there are certain things that
might generally happen that may lead to any violence or that would like take free
speech to another level? Have you noticed any trends where things have resulted in
violence whether it be on eastern michigans campus or any other [college] campus?
6.10 H: the only one ive ever found an issue with is when it came to black lives matter
movement because generally when it comes to things like civil right between like races
and things there [is] a lot of tension and even if neither side means violence it tends to
happen.
6.30 H: I know there was a black lives matter movement protest here like two years ago
they had to have police around. And there was no reason why really because they were
being peaceful
6.50 H: later we found out that if there was going to be a group of mostly black people
then they would send out at least one police out there which I think is rude and infringes
on free speech because they automatically assume that it is going to potentially end in
violence.
