The AUX - Serial port is com15 to 18 and IALA ANT. is com3. These com ports are used for input of DGPS corrections.

The DPS 200 unit receives a set of DGPS corrections from the DPS 102. These corrections have already been compensated
for the ionospheric delay errors. As can be seen, com16 on DPS 132 outputs corrections to com18 on the DPS 200.

29
Fugro Demodulator - DGPS Interface to DPS

In general - when a system like the DARPS/DPS is interfaced to a

Fugro Seastar or Thales SkyFix demodulator it is crucial important that
the serial line communication between the two systems needs to be
set up correctly.

In practice:

Data formats need to correspond for both the transmitting and

receiving system.

Baud rates must also be set to the same for both the transmitting and
receiving system (com port).

RTCM (RTCM Correction Services)

DGPS corrections from selected reference stations on the link are output
to the user.

If this output format is chosen, its necessary through the Remote Sites
Menu to select which reference stations should be output.

RAW (Proprietary Format Correction Service)

DGPS corrections from all reference stations on the link are output to
the user.

If this output format is chosen, its not necessary or possible to

manually select which reference stations should be output.

40
Software - Loading New Software

The DPS and DARPS software can be upgraded and there are several
options that is dependant on:

Available data communication with the vessel

Type of operation
Available service personnel

Options for upgrading:

Small (floppy installation)

Full installation (floppy, flash-path, CD-rom, etc)
Changing hard disk already configured
Visit by service personnel

41
Software - New Reference Station List

The DPS and DARPS systems contains a file with name and
geographical position for DGPS reference stations World-Wide and this
file can be updated by the following procedures:
Start Task Manager by CTRL+ALT+DEL
Go to Processes and end task DiffCorrMasterP
Open Explorer and delete file St_coord_def in the c:\DPS\ETC folder
Copy the new St_coord-def file to the same folder
Restart the DPS software by typing CTRL+ALT+DEL and choose Logoff.

Logoff restarts the software and the new file is copied into the file St_coord
and this is the file the sw uses.

42
Software - Configure COM Ports

Default com port configuration is stated in the DPS Installation Manual

chapter Serial Lines. To change electrical configuration RS-232 and
RS-422 (only for hardware platforms from serial number 2000):
Start Task Manager by CTRL+ALT+DEL
Select File and New Task (Run) and open Explorer
From Explorer, edit c:\MultiCOM\MultiCom_v2.reg in Notepad.
Look up the paragraph for the current comports to change.

Ex.: PortNumber=dword:00000007 => Comport 7

RS422_Mode=dword:0000000 =>RS-232 Mode

RS422_Mode=dword:0000001 =>RS-422 Mode

Save and Exit Notepad.

Execute (double-click on) c:\MultiCOM\MultiCOM_v2.reg.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and Shut down and restart.

Troubleshooting using Software - The Dbviewer

The Dbviewer contains a set of databases that can be used for

troubleshooting e.g. input/output data.
To access the Dbviewer program, type ALT + d when the TMS
Display Window is the active window.
Alternatively you can launch the Task Manager by typing CTRL + ALT
+ DEL. Choose New Task (Run) and choose dbviewer from the scroll
down window.

Troubleshooting Software - I/O Data from DPS

For control of input/output data on the DPS/DARPS com ports, the

"DPINTERFACECOSOLE"-window can be open by changing the parameter from 0 to 1 or 2.

If the parameter is set to 2, the NMEA datastring will be displayed.

52
Hardware Maintenance &
Troubleshooting

53
Troubleshooting - Problems Causing Malfunctions

The GPS antenna, antenna cable and / or connectors are damaged.

Loose or improper connection of all kind of cables involved.
The DGPS interface is set up incorrectly.
The DGPS subscription time has expired.
Wrong set up of UHF/TDMA channel.
The UHF transceiver and / or aerial is malfunctioning.

54
Troubleshooting - Check Signal Reception

Keep the filter of the fan free from dust.

Check cables for mechanical damage.
Check the signal reception on the Fugro demodulator.
A week signal indicates cable, connectors or antenna problems.
Check the signal reception on the DARPS/DPS antenna.
A weak S/N ration indicates cable, connectors or antenna problems.

55
Troubleshooting - Check the GPS Receiver

The GPS receiver can be checked by disconnecting the antenna cable

at the rear side of the hardware unit.
The voltage output on the GPS antenna connector should be
approximately 4.8 5.0 V and indicates that the GPS receiver is OK.

56
Troubleshooting - The GPS & DGPS Antenna

Ensure that the outdoor GPS antenna connectors are wrapped with
waterproof self-vulcanizing tape.
Stretch the tape to double length and start wrapping a bit down on the
cable.
Wrap the tape all over the connectors and if possible - seal it with
electric coating.
An alternate way of waterproofing is using heat shrinkable hose with
glue.
The hose should cover the whole connector and part of the cable and
finally it should be sealed with electric coating.

57
Troubleshooting - Check the GPS/DGPS Antenna

Disconnect the GPS antenna cable at the rear side of the processing
unit.

Measure the resistance between the centre pin and shield in the cable
(with the antenna connected).

The new GPS PRO, AERO L1, and Ashtech Marine 4 antenna does not
have certain resistance that can be measured but the table on the
next page can be used as an guidance.

58
Troubleshooting - Antenna Measurements

Only some of the antennas have a certain resistance.

This table can be used as an guide for checking the antennas.
Be aware that before measurements can be done, the antenna with
cable needs to be short circuited.
Measure between center leader ANT. NAM E TY PE VALUE

59
Troubleshooting - Checking Antenna Cable

Disconnect the antenna in the other end of the cable. Now the Ohm
reading between the centre and the shelf should be infinite if there is
no short-circuiting of the cable.

Make a short-circuiting in the opposite end of the cable and measure

the resistance. Now the reading should be approximate 0 Ohm.

60
The Inmarsat & Spotbeam Demodulators

As a general rule the Inmarsat and Spotbeam demodulator can not be

swapped.

The reason why they should not be swapped is that the demodulator
connected to the Spotbeam antenna outputs 12V.

If they are swapped, the 12V

output might damage the
Inmarsat antenna or terminal.

61
Troubleshooting - Degraded Position Accuracy

If the position is degraded due to the GPS receiver is tracking a

minimum number of satellites the reason might be:

A minimum number of GPS satellites are available and/or the geometric

distribution of satellites on the sky is so poor that computing an accurate
position solution is not possible.

The sky is partly blocked for reception of GPS satellites.

The GPS antenna/cables/connectors are damaged such that only

satellites with a strong signal-to-noise ratio are received.

Is Differential corrections lost?

62
Troubleshooting - Checking the GPS Receiver

If there are problems with tracking satellites in the software it is

possible to check the performance of the GPS-receiver.
Open the top cover of the unit
Locate the GPS-receiver
Observe the led on the GPS-receiver while the system is running

LED indicator

The GPS Receiver

63
Troubleshooting - Checking the GPS - receiver

When observing the GPS-receiver, the LED indicator will give one
green blink for each satellite tracked by the receiver.

The red blink indicates that the GPS-receiver starts counting satellites
over again.

If the GPS-receiver only blinks red the problem is most probably

located in the GPS-antenna or the antenna cable and then you should
follow the procedure for checking the voltage output to the GPS-
antenna and for checking the antenna cable and the antenna.
