A: How was it in Ethiopia?

B: I havent eaten anything for 2 days

A: Can you describe a bit about your country

B: Sure. Ethiopia is located in Africa. Eritrea is located in the North of Ethiopia. Djibouti and Somalia
to the east, Sudan and South Sudan to the west, and Kenya to the South. There are around 102
million people in the country. Drought is the main cause of hunger and poverty, affecting around 10
million people. We have rainy season from June to August. Our average annual rainfall is 510mm.
Compared to Thailand which has around 1500mm, and 1600mm in America.

Ethiopia won against Italy once when they came and try to conquer Ethiopia. Unfortunately,
we lost the second time and Italy took over our country. In World War II, Italy was with Germany and
they lost the war. With help of England, Ethiopia was finally free and became the first country in
Africa to claim independence.

After World War 2, Eritrean War of Independence occurred. It was a war between Ethiopia
and Eritrea which is a part of Ethiopia. The war went on for 30 years. Eritrea was separated in the
end. About 70,000 people died during the war. Ethiopia was left poor and the economy was weak
because they spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the war. In 1974, communism came to
Ethiopia. The king was overthrown and killed. Thousands of people were murdered and also,
thousands were deported. Later in 1991, communism was gone and the first election was held in
1995. Consequently, the economy grew rapidly in the 21st century.

The cause of social issues in our country is mainly from war. There other causes are poorly
planned economy, climate difference and differences in tribes and languages. All of that combined
makes our country to be the poorest country in the world. The war, especially, consumed hundreds
of million dollars and people were killed. The poor management of economy causes our countrys
production to overproduce products and the factories destroy the environment around them which
is already bad. Though, the one that I think is the worst is natural disaster. We are suffering from
drought for about 50 years and about 18 million people need help. It is hard to unite our country and
people because people came from different tribes from different places and they speak different
languages so we couldnt understand each other. In addition, they also have different religion beliefs
which can cause some conflicts in the society.

For our poverty problem, more than 44% of our population lives in the rural area and are
suffering from poverty as well. Lack of rainfall and drought are what lead to drought. We are
suffering from food scarcity, poor health conditions and maybe deaths.

More than 7% of our people has HIV and we havent mentioned about other diseases yet
which makes people to sink deeper into poverty.
Another cause of poverty is the lack of education. 10% or less of our people has education.
For children alone, 3 million of them are out of school. All the things mentioned makes the country
poorer and poorer which also makes it difficult to restore the economy.

The government has created the Productive Safety Net Program which supports rural
transportation, promotes household to create products and promote market development by
increasing household purchase. This alone helped 1.5 million people out of poverty. However, there
are still 37 million people suffering.

Agriculture is growing up since 2005 which reduces poverty by 4% each year.

We usually speak Semitic, Oromo, Amhara, Somali, and Tigreans as our main language. Also,
most of us speak English as the second language.
