Chapter III
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter presents the result of the data collected regarding the

assessment of seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete structure in Naval, Biliran.

The data presented as follows: the profile of the building, the fault line in Naval,

Biliran, and the problems met by the building owners regarding their buildings for the

last past five years.

Table 1
Profile of the Building
Variables f %
Year the building constructed 2 8
1965-1970 0 0
1971-1975 2 8
1976-1980 1 4
1981-1985 3 12
1986-1990 5 20
1991-1995 3 12
1996-2000 6 24
2001-2005 3 12
2006-2010 2 8
Total 25 100
Distance of the structure from the fault line
3.0km-3.9km 4 16
4.0km-4.9km 11 44
5.0km-5.9km 5 20
6.0km-above 5 20
Total 25 100

As gleaned in Table 1, the building constructed at the year 1991-1995 got the

highest percentage of 20 percent. This implies that most of the buildings were

already 25 years of existence.

For the distance of the structure from the fault line, ranging from 4.0 kilometers

to 4.9 kilometers got the highest percentage of 44 percent. This implies that the

structures were far from the fault line.

Profile of the building (cracks and other structural failure)

Building parts Weighted mean Interpretation

Columns
Cracks 2.6 Low
Spalling 1.92 Very low
Delamination 1.52 Very low
Average Weighted Mean 2.01 Very low
Beams and girders
Cracks 2.44 Very low
Spalling 1.76 Very low
Delamination 1.64 Very low
Average Weighted Mean 1.95 Very low
Walls
Cracks 2.76 Low
Spalling 1.72 Very low
Delamination 1.52 Very low
Average Weighted Mean 2 Very low

As gleaned in Table 1.1, cracks and other structural failure in columns were

found to be very low. This implies that the structural elements were structurally made

good.

For beams and girders, cracks and other structural failure were found to be

very low. This implies that the structural elements were structurally made good.

And for the walls, cracks and others structural failure were found to be very

low. This implies that the structural elements were structurally made good.

Shaking of structures 2 7

As reflected in Table 2, cracking of wall surfaces were the problem of the

structure which ranked as 1 followed by the patterned cracking in wall, columns and

beams which ranked as 2. The last ranked was shaking of structures.
