The Feast in honor of Virgin of Candelaria, patron of the city of Puno, is made in the first

fortnight of February each year, and represents the largest and most important cultural event,
musical and dancing by Peru, and one of the three most significant in South America along
with Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and the Carnaval de Oruro, in the amount of symbols and
artistic and cultural manifestations of the cultures themselves Quechua, Aymara .

s origin is related with the beginnings of the cult to the "Virgen de la Candelaria" (Candelaria
Virgin) or "Virgen de Socavn" (Virgin of the Tunnel) in Bolivia. Is much venerated in Puno and
Oruro, Bolivia.

In the afternoon's central day, the virgin statue leaves the church, and more than forty groups
attired in the costumes and masks classic in the culture of altiplano dance, join crowd. Without
doubt the outstanding groups are the Diablada, the Morenada, the Waka Waka, the
Llamerada, the Tuntuna, the Caporal King, the Kallahuallas, and the Sikuri groups.

On the main day, February 2, the virgin is led through the city in a colorful procession
comprising priests, altar boys, the faithful, Christians and pagans carefully maintaining the
hierarchy. This is the moment when the troupes of musicians and dancers take the scene,
performing and dancing throughout the city.

The festival is linked to the pre-Hispanic agricultural cycles of sowing and harvesting, as well as
mining activities in the region. It is the result of a blend of respectful Aymara gaiety and
ancestral Quechua seriousness.

La fiesta en honor a la Virgen de la Candelaria, patrona de la ciudad de Puno, se realiza en la


primera quincena de febrero de cada ao, y representa el evento cultural ms grande e
importante, musical y bailable de Per, y uno de los tres ms importantes en Sudamrica junto
con el Carnaval de Ro de Janeiro y el Carnaval de Oruro.

s origen se relaciona con los inicios del culto a la "Virgen de la Candelaria" o "Virgen de
Socavn". Es muy venerado en Puno y Oruro, Bolivia. El festival est vinculado a los ciclos
agrcolas prehispnicos de siembra y cosecha, as como a las actividades mineras en la regin.
Es el resultado de una mezcla de respetuosa alegra aymara y ancestral seriedad quechua.

En el da central, la estatua de la virgen sale de la iglesia, y muchos grupos con sus mscaras y
disfraces clsicos se unen en la multitud a la danza del altiplano. Sin duda, los grupos
sobresalientes son Diablada, Morenada, Waka Waka, Llamerada, el Rey Caporal y los grupos
Sikuri.

El da principal, 2 de febrero, la virgen es conducida a travs de la ciudad en una colorida


procesin con sacerdotes, fieles, cristianos y paganos. Este es el momento en que los grupos
de msicos y bailarines toman la escena, actan y bailan en toda la ciudad.

No tuve la oportunidad de ir a Puno, pero me gustara ir algn da.
